We're camping at Easter this year, and I think we need to upgrade our sleeping bags. We have 'summer' sleeping bags which came free with our first tent from Halfords.
Can anyone offer any advice? What should I be looking for etc?
I have looked on t'internet to see if there are any 'offers' or 'family sets' but can't find any. I need 2 adult, 2 kids and a toddler.
Use the sleeping bags you already have as an extra layer but definately invest in some good quality bags - there is nothing worse than being cold!
I have always used adult bags with our children (they grow so quickly!) and just tucked the extra under to prevent the little ones slipping down too far.
We camp from Easter to end of September and have the Campus Adventure XL bags for us and the children have the Vango Wilderness XL bags. We prefer the square shaped bags as find the mummy shape to restrictive.
I always take an extra fleece blanket each just in case it is really cold.
As above don't buy kids sleeping bags . We bought 4 Snugpak Chrysalis winter sleeping bags and there fantastic . They have clips to shorten the bag for kids and a built in zip panel to make the bag wider if required .
We've had Snugpak sleeping bags and jackets for years and quite expect these to last years
I've got a Gelert 3 season xl pod, I love it! Plenty of room to move about in it, it's toastie warm even in the cooler months. The only possible downside is it's big when packed away, but I'm happy to forego compactness for comfort!
It's a 400gsm filling (means nothing to me, but from what I googled it's quite a thick filling!!).
We got the kids the exact same in the single versions. As PP's said, didn't bother with proper 'kids' sleeping bags (ie. character ones, or small sized ones) as figured they would grow quickly and we'd get more use out of single style adult sleeping bags.
These sleeping bags are very snug and warm..definitely no complaints from us. The double one is currently on offer at £36 from £55...and I'd say that's a reasonable price. They also come with compression sacks and are easy to put away too.
I also bought hot water bottles from the £1 shop, and make sure we put them in the sleeping bags to warm the beds up about half hour before the kids go down at night. They've never complained about being cold, so far.
I bought these or similar ones on sale before xmas, can't remember what gsm ours are but currently £10 for 300gsm square bags looks good although you may need another layer ie your old bags.
we've also got the Gelert Muscovy XL Pod which are a season 3 bag. Before I got this bag I would sleep in lots of layers and was still freezing cold whereas now I can sleep in virtually nothing. Last weekend I was too hot and had to open it up in order to cool down. Well worth the money

the Gelert Muscovy XL is somewhere in between a mummy and a square sleeping bag.
I have bought a 400gsm mummy sleeping bag from the argos outlet on ebay for about £8 delivered for if I ever need it but the 300gsm tesco one is the same density as the Muscovy so should be more than adequate.
I bought a 3 season bag from a shop called pine valley outlet £25 and they were on buy one get one free at the time. I was in the other day and they had further reductions but I didn't dare look.... I didn't want to see what they had been reduced to lol.
