Ok I know its been done before but I'm after opinions on what bits to order for a cobb BBQ? I can see us using each of the bits you can get (I really enjoy cooking at home) but the full kit is very expensive - what are the must haves? We have a bit of spare cash as we are selling our old camera (have downgraded from a SLR to a point and click) so can afford to do the full kit if its worthwhile but obviously dont want to waste money if there is no need! I really like the idea of being able to make casseroles/roasts/pizzas/bread etc plus would prefer everything to fit togther in the 1 bag.

Which bits should I get?? Also do you need the extension to cook roast chickens? That seems to be the main difference between the full set and the one below.

Thanks guys

Sam

Going to watch this thread with interest, as my beloved Cobb needs replacing after years of sterling service - and accidently being dropped.   I have been wondering whether to go for the full Monty, or just the Cobb as I did last time.

The extension ring means you can cook a whole chicken more easily (so guess you need to ask yourself if you ever will?) We mostly prefer to cook chicken portions, so it doesn't benefit us hugely.

The Kitchen in a Bag also includes a thing for roasting chickens upright (a la beer can chicken, but without the tin).

The same goes for the wok and the frying pan; how much will you use them, or will you just be carting them around for the hell of it?

Yes, they all fit into the one bag (ingenious, really) but it does add to the weight and bulk and you need to have a photographic memory to remember how the heck it all fits in (or keep a list - I do!). This does mean it takes a bit longer to pack it all away as it can feel a bit like a Rubic's cube, in contrast to the standard (Premier) version we had before, which all just chucked into the bag without having to think about it!

Only you know which bits you'll use, and how much. To be honest, we use the roasting rack and the griddle a lot, the wok and the pan less so and we haven't used the extension ring at all to date, but then I daren't leave anything at home 'just in case'!

One of the main things I want it for is doing roast dinners while we are away - I'm guessing this means the extension etc might be useful? I would aim for it to be our main way of cooking, especially for weekends away where taking the double burner etc is a hassle as we have nowhere to set it up with the smaller tent.

The wok sounds really useful for things like casseroles - how long do they take to do? Is it practical when camping?

I guess what i dont want to do is buy the basic setup and then spend extra paying for the rest of the bits seperately a month or 2 down the line. But also dont want to spend £200 only to find half the bits dont get used (though I guess I could always ebay them if that was the case?)

When I bought our Cobb a few years ago I got it through UKCS and got the top one (roasting rack, frying pan, frying dish, cook book, thermometer and lighter).  We didn't get the extension ring (wasn't available then) and manage to cook a whole chicken (medium sizes) without any problems, when making a casserole I've had to put foil on the top of the dish to replace the lid as it was too high with the Cobb lid on (still did the job).  When I had a go at making bread it rose too high and got stick in the lid but next time I will just just use a smaller tin.  We've used everything we bought and if we had to buy it again I'd buy the same.
