I am thinking about using the vacum storage bags to cut back on space, however what could I get that is portable to then deflate them when coming home, something g that sucks the air out?

Would a portable tyre pump suck air out?

Any help would be great

we use a manual pump called an Air Hammer...works a treat for deflating vacuum bags...much better than our 12v pump...

You can get car vacs that plug into the cigarette lighter, they should do the job. Of you can get ones you just roll up to expel the air from, but they don't come in very big sizes (well not that I have found anyway). You can get them from JML.

We had a normal footpump, usually you can move the tube to the other outlet so you can deflate things as well as pump air in. You just put your pillows or sleeping bags in the bag and hold the nozzle end over the hole, worked really well, we sat on them first to get most of the air out then finished off with the footpump, obviously it isn't like using a vaccum but it was good enough, have a go at home first if you have a footpump. You can get pumps with different sized nozzles for the end to choose the size you need.

We have a large flat piece of plywood, that we use as a table top. I just place this on top of the bag then stand on it, and it squeezes most of the air out. I have found this better than suction, as it leaves the bag flat, so packs easier.

You can use your ordinary home vacuum cleaner .... the valve on most bags fits the hose connection on your vac.

We use our air bed pump to suck the air out of ours, just put it on reverse, works a treat

at debs398 - I just bought some vac bags yesterday. I haven't checked yet, but our airbed pump has a number of nozzles (higear tornado 12v). Is this OK, or do you have a special adapter?

Thank a million everyone I have just bought an air hammer from amazon for £8 got massive vacuum bags at pound land today I have been sucking the life out off everything with my house Hoover.

Do you think I could put the tent in one?

It's only worth putting in things that will reduce in volume with air extraction ... pillows, duvets, woollens, etc are fantastic. Cotton, much less so, as the fibres don't store much air.
Our tents pack down tightly into their container bags ... so whether it's worth your while trying to shrink them further, only you can tell!!

From memory (pump is buried somewhere in garage) you put the nozzle on one side to inflate and on another part of it to suck the air out, ours is just a tesco pump
