Hi, I think i've sussed that the campingaz chef can run on other forms of gas apart from the 907 904 cylinders.
But for short trips, can anyone recommend a more compact gas option for this type of stove?
I understand I will need to get the appropriate regulator for the gas (?).
I understand nothing about gas, so idiot's guide level replies please!!

R901 (if you can find one!) is a smaller version of the ones you mention, using the same Campingaz regulator.

For short trips, though, could you not use a Campingaz Bistro (or similar "suitcase" stove from other manufacturers) using readily available disposable "aerosol-type" valved cartridges, instead?

oh damn, have i bought the wrong thing??
I did think it would still be useful to have 2 rings on a short trip - cooking for family of 5 though?

I can pickup a 901 locally - can i still get them refilled if they're a bit rusty??

thanks for reply!

No, you've bought the right thing - just thought you might be looking for something more compact all round (ie not just the cylinder).

Yes they are exchangeable if a bit rusty, though they should be complete with the screw-in top which protects the valve.

Problem is the "CampinGaz Chef" with it's twin burners and grill was never intended to be run of a 901 cylinder even though it will, the 901 is best used for lanterns and small single burners so that you can get a decent burn time.

I would advise go for a 904 cylinder, which is still fairly small compared to other options.

But look at the cost of Gas per kg for the CampinGaz cylinders, the 901 is a real eye opener, although in fairness the prices are from GoOutdoors, my local camping shop exchanged my two 901's for £7 each which worked out at £17.50 per kg still more expensive than using disposable cylinders, but I have a CampinGaz LumoGaz 907 lantern which is perfect for the 901 and runs for almost ever on one cylinder.

As for 901 cylinders I picked my two up from the local tip, you will usualy find them in a locked steel cage outdoors, then find a friendly operative, don't ask for Gas cylinders before locating them first, both 901's I got were quite full of Gas, of course I made donation to the tip operatives favourite charity, and he discretly stuck the crisp £5 note into his sky rocket!.

Anyway GoOutdoors current prices for CampinGaz refills.

901 = £13.50 (£33.75 per Kg!) cylinder holds 400gms

904 = £19.99 (£11.11 per Kg)  cylinder holds 1.8Kg

907 = £19.99 (£7.27 per Kg)  cylinder holds 2.75kg

Hope that helps.
