Hi Everyone

I was just wondering if any of you know how to check the levels of gas left in bottles? my hubby said he thinks he saw a gas level indicator in go outdoors? has anyone tried this sort of thing? are they any good?

Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I'd rather have some sort of clue as to how much gas weve got instead of just running out whilst in middle of cooking a meal which you know is exactly what would happen lol

Best way is to weigh them, stamped on bottle somewhere will be tare weight, weight of empty bottle, you know the weight of the gas in a full bottle as bottle is described by weight of gas, ie 4.5kg butane, so weighing will give you an accurate figure of what is left.

what about the Magnetic indicators have you heard if they are any good? just a thought as if you go away for a few days may be difficult to tell how much is in it? sorry may seem like a daft question its just new to all this and we have a gas bottle that was originally bought for our gas bbq but are now using for our camping stove instead (may as well as have gotten rid of bbq prefer charcoal taste lol)

Weigh it before you go & provided it is over half full you should be ok for a 2 wk hol. The stickers ain't that good when bottle is nearly empty. You can get a regulator with gauge but expensive. best way is to weigh it, if weight only just above tare then swap it for full. If you are just cooking you should get a seasons camping out of a small 4.5kg Calor butane.

thanks tentz we'll do that (or rather will get hubby to do that lol) as to be honest it does seem the most straight forward and cheapest way of doing finding out whats what

Weighing is the only accurate way to determine the contents.
Gauges are a waste of time as the pressure at the top of the bottle remains almost constant until the bottle is nearly empty

I use the Butane 4.5Kg cylinders and I put a new one on at the beginning of last saeson.

We only use gas for cooking and last year we were away for 50 nights all in.
This year we have already had 15 nights away and we are still on the same cylinder.

Magnetic gas level indicators are in my opinion a waste of money, I bought one what a waste.

+ 1. They just about work on 13 / 15 Kg but anything smaller they are useless.

thanks for the responses everyone

we decided to weigh it after all and it turns out weve got nearly 5kg left as we had bought a 6kg bottle (it was bought for a gas bbq) so it should keep us going for a while yet as we had already had a couple of bbq's and a weekend away camping before weighing it at least thats one less worry

You could always use the calor light bottles next time as they have a built in level gauge. Not sure how accurate they are though.

I have the gas indicator on the Green patio gas Stays showing full for ages  then   suddenly drops to empty and you can still have quite a bit left. so not very reliable

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

We have a 907 Bottle which from doing some research weighs about 6.5kg when full. I have just weighed ours before next weeks trip and its 4kg so plenty to last for this season.

But the empty weight of the cylinder is around 3.6kg, leaving you with only about 400g of gas from an original 2.72kg.

Really glad I saw this post as I was going to get one of the magnetic ones but I won't bother now. My dad has an old spring weighing thing that he used to use in their old caravanning days so I'll just cadge that off him instead.

I just look at mine.

..but then I use BP bottles which are nice light semi-transparent fibreglass so I can just see the fluid level inside.
