Hello all, Me and my family are novices at all this camping stuff and are taking our first holiday end of july (week at Faithcamp, peterborough showground)I'd just like to say we have found these forums amazing and pretty much all our purchases have been informed through members reviews, comments etc, so thanks all.

One of the purchases we haven't made yet is a coolbox, through looking on here I think we have decided on a igloo maxcold (or possibly a colemans extreme, but prob the former) I can't find anywhere that has them in stock so we could have a look and get a feel for the size so just wondered what the common consensus would be?

We are a family of 5 (6 by december) the children are young, 6 and under so we aren't catering for a bunch of teenagers or anything, but want it to be big enough so don't have to purchase something else in a couple of years. Any thoughts gratefully received, thankyou

I've used this one but dont have any kids so you need a larger one..you dont state the size you are looking at

Think the igloo is a pretty good cooler and will match your needs.

Thing is you can go very large but then it takes up half the car

When buying myself I considered the following:

How much 'fridge food' I/we would use/need for the week,
Could I substitute fridge items for non-perishables?,
How much room I had to spare in the car/trailer,
How long it needed to stay cool without ice top ups,
Price I was willing to pay.

What are you specific requirements?

We're a family of 3 and just bought a 50L Igloo for a 4 day camping trip. It was just about the right size for us but was brimming when we started. For the 5 of you I doubt you'd get everything in it for a long trip but would probably be OK if you are willing to buy food to put in it whilst away. 

The bigger issue you may find if you go much bigger is the physical space they take up rather than the amopunt of food you can get in it !

Further to earlier answers, we have a Ford Galaxy and there are only two of us so room isn't really an issue. However from a practical point of view what do members recommend. We are going away for a week and up until now have used Cooler Bags. but are now looking at a box. Considering this one

pitdiver: The Coleman Extreme & Igloo Maxcold are both good cool boxes. The 70lrt Coleman maybe on the large size for just two of you. Both brands are big cool boxes (I know you said room is not a problem). We have owned the 36ltr Coleman and Igloo Maxcold 50ltr and they have been fine size wise (family of three).

Can you get to look at any before you buy to gauge the size..? I would imagine the coolboxes work better if kept more or less full rather than half empty..?

I agree with romaka, when I bought the secong Igloo cool box it was all down to the dimensions of the coolbox, ensuring it would fit in the space in the truck, it had to sit beside the one seat up in the back.  Whereas the first Igloo box is a lovely large box, 70litres I think.  The best investment we made, there are only 6 of us, but it does camping in the hot and sunny France. With no electric, just ice added.
