Being new to this camping lark(1st trip ever in my caravan on Thursday) I have made a few(!?!) rookie mistakes. No.1-didn't realise I needed an inverter if we didn't have a hook up on site. No. 2 - Asked what the best way to cook in a caravan without an oven and bought the best answer - Halogen Cooker. No. 3 Said oven is 1300 watts. I have a 1000 watt inverter. What do people use to instead of an oven(we don't have one built in) to cook oven food in that is a low wattage product...

Hi formula1girl - I lived in Chandlers Ford and worked in Eastleigh . Could you not consider electric hookup? Worth the outlay unless you want to continue with inverter. The camping supply shops sell mini ovens at low wattage, not sure how good they are though.

We bought, and have just tested during a week away, a low wattage (650) camping oven by "Quest" we LOVE it, roast POTS, breaded fish, lemon meringue pie, wouldnt be without it now, found it on the interweb for less than £30 delivered.

Probably not a good idea to attempt to pull 1000W off a caravan battery at it is about 85 amps and will blow the fuses or if the output is not fused it will melt your cable insulation and ruin your battery. Anything above about 100W is not something I would try in a caravan and even then only for short periods of time. A battery only has a finite charge and a rapid drain on it is not going to help its long term life.

If you are going to insist on mains power you will have to go on EHU or get a generator (that is another minefield altogether).

As birder said forget electric cooking without a mains hook up there is nothing to my knowledge that would run of a battery inverter or not,there are some products i think that create an oven on top of the gas ring it may be worth starting a thread to ask that question.
After that there are the cadac type cookers which i dont understand but ime sure i read you can do a roast on some of them.

A 1300w oven would flatten a 110Ah battery in about 30 minutes! You'd also need some very substantial cabling to carry that sort of current.

As others have said it's not really viable to use any electric heating or cooking in a caravan* without mains hook-up.

*It can be done with boats - but I know os more than one that have in excess of 800Ah in the battery banks!

Some years ago as an experiment I ran my 115w slow cooker via a 300w inverter from an 85 aph battery that was fully charged.

The curry was just cooked nicely when the inverter cut out, about 4.5 hours.
