as a child I remember my parents buying a new concept in camping 'The Tentomatic'
the car roof rack formed part of the actual frame for the tent, you pushed a button and 'legs' came out of the rack and the tent canvas folded out over the frame, I loved it because it always attracted a lot of attention as my dad drove the car from under the tent. I found a Pathe news clip about other innovating camping/caravanning ideas,including the Tentomatic, I hope the link works

Thanks for posting these clips I really enjoyed them.  Personally I cannot understand anyone who would want to take a washing machine on holiday with them, either then or now but I suppose we are all different.
