We have just been given a Halfords 400+ Roofbox and was wondering if you could advise us what to pack in it? Also taking the trailer as well due to the Vango Diablo 900 being very heavy and bulky to carry.Our 2 daughters aged 20 and 18 are coming with us so they will more than likely be bringing far to much stuff(clothes,make up etc)Thankyou.

Just be aware of the maximum load of both the car roof and the box itself. They are handy for storing bulky things, especially those you might not need everyday. With heavier items don't forget about the ease of getting them out and down to ground level.

The vac bags are good, we tend to store the lighter but bulky items such as pillows, sleeping bags, air beds, fleece blankets etc, this avoids any issue with weight but it is also easy to get into the box and out again.

I carry the lighter bulky stuff in my roof box with the intention of keeping below the recommended roof bars/box weight. When I attatch my box th square "U" bolts go under the bars into the box and then the plates and turn nuts, but under the left and right plates I run a ratchet strap and then tighten down the nuts that makes the load secured to the bars and the box is in effect a surround. There was a pair of short narrow straps that came with the box that I use around the outside in case of catch failure, even though it is a rear opening box.I have witnessed a box opening on a motorway with unsecurred contents scattered.

I use my roof box to carry all of the lighter items sleeping bags etc.,plus a folding table,fan heater,camping stove(double burner and grill type) and anything else that is soft,bulky and not likely to get damaged when closing the lid.Please be aware ot the limits that you can safely carry on the car roof,roofbox weight to be included,and the maximum weight for the roof box can carry,this is usually around 55kg.I alsomake sure that nothing can slide around when cornnering or braking as a sudden thud does tend make you jump a little.
