Hi all. Is it ok to use a domestic lamp fitting, hung from the ceiling and plugged into the EHU, or do I need a special camping lamp? Not sure if there are any safety issues re condensation. Many thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the site.  Hopefully you have bought a camping EHU which will be fitted with an RCD and twin pole RCD.  As far as I am aware it is not illegal to use a domestic light fitting.  If you do it is better to use a florescent bulb as they are cooler and less likely to damage the fabric of the tent

Last year we bought a 12 volt Vango Rechargable 60 LED wand light wich will plug into an EHU, car or can be used around the house in an emergency.  It gives a good light and a full charge will last several hours.

Regards Bob

My husband made our light fitting which uses lamp cable, and we have not had any problems, and it worked out much cheaper

We use a couple of cheap bedsise low wattage 230V lamps from B&Q on some small table tops, away from the tent wall. I think around £10 for the 2 of them Great level of warm yellow glow instead of the bright white LED. Not too much exposed heat with the small shades on neither You can also install an inline dimmer if you wish to be able to control the light levels further. As said before no issues when using the EHU RCD hookup, just watch the heat if hanging from the ceiling. LED will give off extremely less heat.

We also use small domestic lamps. They give off a much nicer glow. We picked them up in Asda for about £4 each and installed low voltage bulbs.

Range had one of the Kampa bulkheads for £14.99 on the weekend. (Which is less than what I paid on Amazon, but we won't mention that )

I've only used ehu once so far and that was at a halloween camp. I just took our bedside lamps from home for the bell tent and used one of these in the kitchen tent with a 40 watt bulb.

Thank you all. Looks like I should be ok then. I'm using a low wattage energy bulb so much less heat than standard bulbs and i've found a cage type shade.I got the EHU from Go Outdoors.
