I have a question about  maintenece on my montana 6  poles.

as they are steel they are prone to get rust on them ,well mine was ex display so already has rust marks on them .now io can rub them down but the rust will eventualy come back,

Now if i use WD40 or such on my poles i am sure it is liable to affect the intergrity of the waterproofing of the tent ( well thats unless someone knows different)

I have thought about getting the big white candles and using that on the poles  to create a water resistant barrier  to stop it rusting more .

so does anyone else have any suggestions

candles will work, or a smear of vegetable oil. You're right to avoid WD40 & 3-in-1 oils, they may mark your tent.

I have similar poles for my Vermont, but they have no rust on them and we're in our fifth season. I haven't treated them in any way. I'm wondering where you store your poles - could it be damp?

I've used WD40 on our Montana Poles for the last 5 years with no ill effect. I usually give them a good clean at the end of the camping year (or if we come back wet) and spray them all up with WD40, let it sit for a while then remove the excess with a cloth. This removes virtually all of it so little chance of contamination. Most of the WD40 evaporates anyway. I always let them dry off in the sun after that then put them away. Not had a problem yet. Yes, a bit of rust develops on the ends but not enough to be a problem

HTH
