I've seen a link here for a good offer on a Coleman Xtreme coolbox. Can anyone tell me from experience how they actually measure up against a thermo electric box? I have a Camping Gaz TE box and it does good service, but I find I'm paying (£2.50 per night on most recent trip) for EHU just for the cooler. If I could get by without EHU I would like to. It would give me better choice of sites to visit for a start. Can the Coleman actually compare in terms of keeping stuff chilled?

Hi Bean52

take a look at this link

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=279452

I have an igloo koolmate electric, I only use the electric side for colling it down pre camping and during to and from, we don't use EHU and uise it with ice blocks, my mate has one and it realy is good and uses the same techniques as us.

Pre cool with ice/ ice blocks

Put cold and frozen food in

wet towel etc.

TBH most people moan about the electrics until you go for a 4 way fridge, it is excellent bit of kit but be quick.

Coleman Extreme / Igloo Maxcold are both good products and work well. The only issue maybe the size of the cool boxes. They will.keep items cool cold for 4,/5 days. Just top up with ice if needed which can be purchased from a local supermarket

Personally, I liked the idea of the electric cool box. Plug it in your electric hook up and what could possibly go wrong. Plug it in the ciggy lighter when travelling to keep it at a constant low temperature.

The things that mainly put me off are as follows.

1. Requires electricity constantly.
2. Electrical failure = bad experience.
3. Potential noise
4. The box not being able to keep food cold enough in higher temperatures.

The one thing you can almost always rely on when camping at sites is ice, or the ability to use their facilities to freeze or re-freeze. Having a box that requires an icy top up occasionally, and nothing else, appealed to me. Something that can withstand higher temperatures than basic electrical coolboxes.

The downside to the box we're discussing? Large. It's not a small box but it's also not that huge.

I've spent ages weighing up the pros and cons and i'm clear that the Xtreme (or similar 5 day boxes) are my better option. I've not used it yet so i'll hold out on the big thumbs up or down until then. I'm confident i've made the right decision..
