Whatever you do don't take the cheap beer fridges, they are terrible. They work on piezoelectric and can only reduce the temperature to say 18 degrees below ambient. And if its 25 degrees in your tent, the you'll be pouring your butter on to your toast.

Your only real choices are the proper three way camping fridges (can be expensive) or a tabletop fridge (cheaper but a bit bulky)

I have a tabletop fridge from comet, cost me 70 quid and it works great.

Many campsites in France rent out fridges on site. This would be cheaper, and means you wouldn't have to transport it so would save space.

Probably the best solution, as mentioned above is to hire a fridge on the campsite, at around 4Euro per day it's a no brainer to have a proper fridge and not a cooler, especially in the South of France during summer.

Having said that, in the latest Argos catalogue they are doing a Table Top fridge for around £80 at 30lt quite a good size and compact.

For the South of France to keep things cool for our 3 week foray and campings we use a Waeco CF25 quite an indulgence, but for the last 3 years it has more than earned it's keep, great for the journey taking little room up in the boot of our VW GOLF and on the campsite works like a regular fridge and great for days out.

In a word the best bit of kit we have.

I've been wondering if it is practical to buy a cheap 240 volt fridge and a 12v to 240v inverter to run it in the car.
Has anyone any experience of this.

-------------
We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

iv also got the argos fridge and its really good, goes very cold very quickly as its got a miniature version of the big motor/pump thingy round the back that your fridge-freezer at home has ... not one of those silent beer-chiller type coolers that really just about manages to keep already cold things cool for a day then warms up.

everyones needs are different - but for us it keeps bacon, butter, hams, chicken etc and enough wine/beer + soft drinks cold for 1-2days till we need to go buy some more ( usually alcohol lol.)

its got a tiny freezer compartment which i put ice cubes in the plastic bag they come in from supermarket into and it keeps them frozen till they are consumed! -)))

and at 79.95 you really cant go too far wrong with it!.
