I am looking for a new multi tool with pliers and a saw. Having had a Leatherman Wave for 11 years I was thinking of a Leatherman Juicy XE6 or a CS4 but the Victorinox Swiss Multitool has also been pointed out as a possible option by a friend. Do any of you have these tools or any other suggestions?
Defo need pliers and a saw, decent serrated knife and couple of screwdriver heads would be handy. Don't really need the tool for getting stones out of horses hooves!
Leathermans and Gerbers are heavily used in my industry as they are tough and reliable. I have a Gerber and love it.
Although they are expensive, I actually bought my current one from B&Q for £30 some years ago which was an unexpected bargain.
If it breaks, send it off and they will repair it free or replace it. That's the general idea although if you abuse it beyond it's capabilities, they'll probably tell you to sod off...
Is weight (or lack of it) important? I have a Victorinox Swisstool and it's very well built, but quite heavy compared to some others.
One recommendation I would make - go for one that takes standard hex screwdriver bits. Built-on screwdriver bits that can't be replaced are the parts that in my experience get mangled first.
I've got a CS4. It was a present - I wouldn't pay anything like the asking price. That said it is a very nice tool. The blade is sharper and seems to keep it's edge better than the Victorinox.
I also have a Victorinox Ranger - the bottle opener and tin opener blades are much better than the Leatherman.
Personally I'm a Gerber fan - their blades have generally been slightly better than Leatherman and a lot better than Victorinox. That said it's a Leatherman that I carry in my pocket at work as they did a nice small neat model with decent screwdrivers and usable pliers (I'm an IT Manager).
When I decided to upgrade my main one recently from the 10+ year old Gerber I bought in the States I went for another Gerber.
Thanks for your advice all, will look at a few Gerbers as I hadn't really considered them, having played with a couple of Victorinox ones I think they are being ruled out for now.
