I Have just bought a Camingaz Vario Delux and for the life of me I cannot work out what that bit of metal wire in the middle of the lid does. Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi Ziltam, I've just been google-ing your Vario and from what I can make out on enlarged picture on Amazon I would say it looks as though the peice of metal you describe is to prevent the lid from closing on you, it would appear though that they do not all have it, cant see why it would need it if you use the side panels. hope this helps.

I have been eyeing those up as well and remember reading that the bit of metal is to prevent you using the centre hob (as it were) as a hot plate. It's the top of the grill and shouldn't be covered. That's what i've figured out from owners experiences.

More importantly, what do you think of it so far? My old sunngas one has been brilliant but it takes up more room in an already beleaguered car as it is.. Still working perfectly although a little bent. The Vario looks like it slims down very well once packed away. Do spill the beans.. !

Yep, Soggysteve's answer sounds more feasible, doesn't explain why some don't have it but does it really matter as long as it cooks why worry, just enjoy.

Thanks everyone. I am just curious as it is there but there is no reference to it anywhere. It's as good as any theory I have come up with to date SoggySteve. As for how it performs, it only came today and I haven't as yet used it in anger. It does pack down well though and has a carry handle integral to the case so it is easy to carry around. I used to have the Campingaz Chef and found it too bulky. Once I have used it, I will of course keep you posted, :-D

I think it's a great looking bit of kit despite the tiny grill pan. I'm interested at how it performs as a grill mainly although it's not a deal breaker..

The following is a quote from an owner with the same inquiry..

Received our Vario which we are very please with. Build quality, cooking times etc... As previous reviewer mentions there is a random piece of metal like a hinge in the centre of the lid when you open the stove up which seems useless and no reason for being there. After speaking with Campingaz this piece of metal is there as a safety device to prevent you from using the centre burner/grill as a hot plate or warming device for any pans preventing spillages and subsequent burns to the user etc... So do not use the centre burner for pans.

I received mine yesterday, still waiting for the legs (as they had gone 'walkabout'!).
The metal bit n the middle is to prevent you from putting a pan or anything else in the middle.
It will be tested from tomorrow for a week, hopefully it will be ok.
