My daugther(4 years old) and I went on our maiden camping voyage last weekend, and had a great time.

We shared a double airbed, and although my daughter slept like log, everytime I turned over, she rolled on top of me because of the way the airbed dipped.  It was awful... a bit like a water bed.   Then at 2am, my backside was touching the cold floor through the mattress, and it only stayed 'elevated' if I lay flat on my back.

Soooo, I thought I need two single blow up mattress instead.  But then, looking around, I've seen some cheap campbeds, and I was wondering about putting single airbeds ON TOP of the campbeds... so that I don't get that 'roll off the bed and onto the floor' feeling in a morning... (that was the worst feeling EVER, actually crawling out of bed...).  Putting 20cm of air bed on top of 20cm of bed, makes a decent height so I don't have to do the (not very graceful) crawling thing....

However, the girl in Go Outdoors today said that she didn't think it would work... something about the airbed putting too much pressure on the campbed.  I would have thought it would have lessened the pressure actually, since the weight of my backside would surely be more evenly distributed across the airbed?

Do you think it could work?  I realise SIMS seem to be with way to go, but I am on a budget, so can't keep buying. (its already cost far more than I anticipated, but I need to be comfortable when sleeping....)

I bought the two campbeds today, and now wonder if I should go back and get a couple of single airbeds to go on top... only 6 quid each...

What do you think?

Thanks

Tracy

Sounds like your airbed may have been under inflated. Have a look at the Intex queen size air bed. Ours was about twenty five beer vouchers from Costco.

Thanks, yes, maybe I should try and blow it up harder next time :)  Maybe put it on top of the two camp beds to lift it too... Hmmmm.....  that's not a bad idea...

It definitely does work Tracy cos that's what we do! It's the most comfortable nights sleep ever, in fact, I miss my camping bed when I go home!!

We use the rubberised type of airbed (although these are more expensive and difficult to get hold of) and they fit perfectly onto the campbed. I put a fleece blanket on first, covered by a sheet and then sleeping bag and another fleece blanket.

Prior to this we tried airbeds, including the double height ones with no success, but we've been doing campbed with airbed on top for about the last 5 years and would never do anything else now.

Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Well having started on the floor with a double air bed, then progressing to a double air bed on top of a camp bed, that was fine but every time OH got up to go to the loo it disturbed my sleep.

So now we have 2 single air beds with a mattress cover and sheet on top to hold them together placed on top of the Kampa camp bed, best nights sleep ever.

Gives us a bit of storage underneath and much easier to getup from when you are our age lol!

Oh and just to add, we have two singles rather than a double, we like our own space and find it warmer when we're camping.

After a few disasters with Airbeds my friend bought a camp bed for her daughter which was about £19 from Lidl but has put a single memory foam mattress topper on it which means you don't feel the metal bar at the side,no complaints so far from her moody teenager  lol

I have thought about the airbed/campbed setup but could I ask if it damages the sewn in groundsheet, with the pressure of the campbed legs on the groundsheet.

VangoMan the only time we have had a problem is if we've been on a hardstanding, this can be countered by putting something like pringle lids under the feet. Other than that it's never been a problem.

Just don't try putting two airbeds on top of each other like my H tried at the weekend (because one of the airbeds kept going down, and he wasn't sure which one, so he thought he'd sleep on both.)

I tried it out the next morning after he mentioned how horrendous it was - it was like trying to sleep on a bowl of jelly!

Well, I have taken the plunge, disregarded Go Outdoors (illogical) advice and spent a whopping £12 on a couple of single airbeds to go on top of the campbeds.  Had them all pumped up and on top of the campbeds this evening in the lounge, and it felt very comfortable - especially using a down eiderdown on top of them.

Trying our first longer (2/3/4 days) trip next week, so I will be back with whether or not it worked!  :)

Thanks everyone for your great advice...

Tracy
