Now I've got the camping bug, I'd like to purchase a heater. I don't know where to start on what type, but I want one that is effective. Can anyone help?
The simplest, cheapest and safest is to get an EHU and a fan heater. Get one rated at 2kw or less so you don't blow any breakers on typically limited site supplies
I would advise looking for one with more than one heat setting and fan speed, thermostatically controlled, with an anti-trip mechanism if at all possible, no more than 2kW maximum output.

We have EHU and a fan heater and wouldn't be without it. They are not silent of course but heat up the tent so quickly (and we have a large tent) that you don't need it on for that long. They are also quite small. Get one with a safety cut out to avoid overheating.
We have an oil filled heater, which has dual switches, and can operate at 600W or 2.6ish Amps or both switches at 1500W or 6.5ish Amps, they take a little longer to heat the room than a fan, but stay warm for a while after they have been switched off. This is offset however by the size. But the low power mode is great for 6 Amp EHU.

I've got an oil filled heater, was a little worried that it may not heat up my tent (4m bell tent) but from what youve said it should do just fine, may take a bit longer than a fan heater, but that doesnt really bother me.
We got a cheap Quest quartz heater from go outdoors as i wanted something quiet. I quite like it, it reminds me of the electric fire we had when i was a child ! Its got two heat settings and an automatic cut-off sensor that activates if it gets knocked over
We have the Quest Ceramic heater from GO - but I fogot to pack it on our recent trip to Sherwood Forest and it cooled down a lot when the sun went in and Mrs PJAZ is nesh to say the least.
Works fine and easily heats up our Horizon 8 when I remember to pack it
