Anyone recommend roof boxes and bars for a 2006 Toyota Avensis Saloon/ hatchback.

These seem O.K KAMEI Huskey XXl.

Im just having a bit of trouble working out if my car is a Saloon or Hatch back! (Its both to be honest) or weather it makes no difference to the type of bars you can fit.

Have a look at the Thule website fit guide, which should hopefully tell you what bars etc. you need for your vehicle.

The beauty of the Thule boxes is that they can be opened from either side.

To add my own tuppence worth ,

Bars - stay well away from the very cheap bars peddled on Ebay. They are *exceptionally* nasty.

OTOH, Thule are very good - but very over priced (imo).

Best all round value, imo, are the Green Valley' bars (yes, I know it sounds like tinned corn ;) but they're well made, and reasonably priced.

Boxes - as has been mentioned, go (if possible) for a box that opens either side - or at the rear.

Our last box was rear opening, and it wasn't until we bought a large Karrite side-open box that I realised just *how* difficult they are to fit!

It's virtually impossible to reach across a wide box to secure the hinge side mounting points - honestly, a real pain in the proverbial.

We had to mount the box on the bars, then lift the bars onto the existing car rails - it would have been an easy fix with a double side opening one.

Thanks guys and excellent advice Olderfolder. I was gonna go for the single side opening box and thought how hard could it be to fill but I hadn't thought about attaching it and with Arthritis I need things to be as easy as poss.

Is the Green valley bar company French. Set it to english but some of the options for the Avensis are coming up in Frenchie so difficult to pick my car out!!

Thanks

With arthritis you *definitely* need a double side opener.

As an illustration, the only way I could check the tightness of the front hinge-side interior thumb nuts was by winding down the front passenger window and (after shinning up a step ladder) standing in the window opening and leaning precariously across the roof.

As for the bars - try Graham Goode - www.grahamgoode.com

No connection (other than buying our bars there) but they have good prices and totally honest service, with next day delivery.

If there was a problem they would arrange collection themselves - no nonsense about paying a fortune to return the bars yourself.

Yes the GV bars are French - TUV approved, etc. Very decent bars for the money - and a world away from the horrors that get sold for £30 on Ebay.   Twice the price, ten times the quality.

While I can see the advantages of an open both sides box all the ones I have previously owned have been single sided opening and I have never had a problem with putting the fittings in even on our latest 580 litre one. Our friends whose car has roof rails simply leave the box attached to the bars and take the whole thing off as one unit as they find this quicker than taking of/putting on each item individually. But in the end you pays your money and takes your choice

I have the Kamei Corvara 475ltr roof box, stunning. I have been down the Thule route and they are not in the same class as the top Kamei boxes. I have had broken locks and poor build quality in the Thule boxes and cracks in the bodywork I had the misfortune to own. Then you have to deal with Thules woeful 'Customer Care'department, be warned. Also know as the warranty squirmers.

The other thing with Thule is that their cubic capacity figures are, shall we say, optimistic. I have a 475 litre box and can get far more in it than my old 500 ltr Thule. Some sellers will also tell you this,if they are being honest with you.

The lock mechanisms on the Kamei boxes are much superior to all the other boxes I have owned. They also do models which open both sides too,not only Thule do this.I have fitted my Kamei Corvara on Thule aero bars and feet and cannot fault the combination.

It is huge and I am 6'3" and a big build and could easily fit in it. The carbon finish is lovely and the fitting and materials used are all superb. Kamei make the roof boxes for Mercedes Benz, top notch.

Do you research, go look at all the boxes you like and find a bargain. I got mine from an ad on these pages for £130 in as new condition and would not change it for any other box on the market.

Regards all

We have the Halfords Exodus 580 bought second hand for £60 certainly not the best box I have owned but not the worst and never worth the retail price of £639 as there are much better boxs out there for less than its "discount" price

Most of the companies selling roofbars over the internet have a drop down mene where you can type in the name of the manufacturer and mode of your vehicle, and that will then show the type and cost of roof bars available to you.

Mine were purchased from TOYS 4 CARS.
