MY little charcoal BBQ is due to be replaced soon ready for next season.  I have read various posts and decided that the LP version is the to have and can be connected into the external gas point on the caravan.  BUT I like BBQed food to have that smoky aroma to it and looking at the BBQ element there does not appear to be anywhere the fat can drip and burn off.  Cadac themselves have said that lava rocks cannot be used.  So it seems to be more of a frying pan than a BBQ-any comments?

when i bbq on mine there is often extra flames, and smoke from the fats burning of.it is not like a frying pan in bbq mode,as you bbq on a wire frame,so the fats drip down.i'm not saying it will taste the same as your charcoal bbq,but as a gas one it's fine.

As wonger says its not the same as charcoal BBQing but they are very convieniant . And you could allways buy a folding charcoal BBQ and use it when the weathers fit lol Its what we will do know we have a cadac

Am I right in saying that when you use the BBQ element the 'dish' underneath the wire gets hot and this heat cooks the food on the grill. If the fat drips it will burn off and smoke in the dish. Doesn't this make a horrible burnt mess?
Can't see why a bit of lava rocks cannot be used.

Love our Safari Chef. Cook breakfast on it too. No problems at all, even with the cleaning. We clean it after every use.

I was put off for ages buying a cadac because most people said they are a nightmare to clean. After a lot of thinking and comparing we bough one about a year ago. I love it! I cook most thinks on it and find that its not that hard to clean. I Even managed to convince my dad (who is very hard to please!!) to buy the smaller one and he is so impressed he used his at home too!
Its not the same as a charcoal BBQ, if you want that flavour then the only thing to do is buy a charcoal one. Its more of a griddle but with all the bits and bobs you get with it you can cook anything on it.
We also clean ours after every use with hot soapy water and it doesn't take long at all.

yes you are right, but the bit that the fat hits is easy to clean.the hardest bit to clean is the main unit,as the pot stand gets in the way.i solved this by removing the clips that hold the pot stand on,so now i can remove it for cleaning.

We use ours on the caravan gas but we have an external gas point on our van. Previously used to carry 2 gas bottles and use one for the cadac.
