We had a Coleman xtreme this year and I wasnt impressed if I'm honest. We had to replace ice every other day. It was hardly scorching this summer either. I had it covered with a wet tea towel and bubble wrap filling spaces. Chilled it down before use. Opened max 4 times per day. We found it a pain over 2 weeks in honesty. I didn't like the layer of water in the bottom either.
So, next year we are going to bite the bullet and get a plug in fridge. We've had a campingaz plug in coolbox before but I want a proper fridge this time.
Only needs to be ehu - no need for other fuel types.
Would folks recommend proper camping fridges (if so which) or would a table top from Argos or somewhere do the job?
I think £150 is as much as I want to spend and it doesn't need to be too huge.
If you only want EHU fridge then you won`t go wrong with a table top fridge for £80. Go to Argos site and enter catalogue number 481/0423 into the search box to see it.
Domestic table top fridge would be cheapest option & would keep stuff cold in very hot weather when a camping absorption type fridge might struggle, although not really a problem in normal UK summer climate.
Limitations of domestic fridge would be care required in transportation & of course you cannot run it in car on the way to site. A chest type 3way camping absorption fridge can be filled & cooled on mains at home, transported in car on 12v & might be regarded as more convenient in a camping situation, but cost is £150 upwards. With either type, you need to take some sort of firm base to stand it on & it needs to be level.
Yep Tesco were doing some tabletop fridges last Christmas, for £70 quite a good buy, if you have the room to transport.
We use a Waeco CF25 which is a proper portable compressor fridge, and has served us well both for along the journey and our fortnight campings in the South of France, one of my better buys at £150 although the current price is around £500 which is a little ott for a camping fridge. But the Waeco CF fridges are a serious piece of kit.
Hi there, we have a Dometic Q40 £139 from Norwich Camping fab bit of kit. It's used 5 days a week in OH's truck and then comes camping with us. Never had a problem with it and the price is quite reasonable
We use table top fridge and its great, however heavier and bulkier to transport than a camping fridge (which we use for wkend trips). The little ice box comes in handy too, especially for longer trips when I want to buy food for a few days at a time, also for camping abroad in warmer climates. Its great to be able to access food easily and not have the issue of food getting buried.
we bought the Argos value table-top fridge and its excellent for 79.99. its got a proper commpressor motor and chills down really quickly even if you fill it with non-chilled items it doesnt take long to get really cold inside. + i use the ice making box for chilling a bottle wine/other drinks quickly. ours has just 2 shelves but we find that to be fine for just 2 of us.
in the co-op last summer we saw that they were selling the matching table top freezer for 99.99 - but we dont need a freezer too lol - although it would be handy for making ice cubes for drinks but thats a bit extravagant i thought for camping lol - what next? a dishwasher! lol
