I have just purchased an Outwell vermont XLP. Currently I have a standard hook up with RCD and three socket outlet. I want to provide electric to the front area of the tent for kettle, toaster, fridge light etc. I also want to provide electric to the middle section on the tent for hair dryer, straighteners, heater, light,  phone chargers etc.  I understand that the total current needs to be restricted  so we won't have everything on at once. What is the best way to distribute power around the tent.  Should I connect a two gang trailing extention socket from the main RCD unit in the front of the tent or should I connect a second RCD unit from the first?

I was going to answer this and then decided not to as whatever I said would be wrong and then thought what the heck why not
We use a switched 13amp trailing socket from the RCD, however as most of our heavy usage equipment is in the Porch this is where the RCD is clipped to the leg of a table and the trailing socket is in the living area for light, charging items etc etc etc.Any unused sockets are intalled with childproof socket covers. Campsites have different amp supplies 10amp probably being the most common and most appliances have the wattage on them so you can work out the amps Amps = Watts divided by Volts

Theres no difference using an extension lead from your rcd protected socket than plugging appliance straight into rcd socket, you have same protection, you don't need 2 rcd's. As you say, you need to ensure you don't trip ehu point, by having 2 appliances on at the same time that draw a large current, ie fan heater & kettle. All you need to remember is that electrical appliances used for heating anything should not be used together. It is good to keep ehu sockets & extension sockets off ground if you can.
