Hi...hope some one can help...we have bought a new van (bailey orion) which hasnt got many plug sockets so am thinking about getting a 12v telly...any suggestions greatly appreciated....thanks
Hi Penguin. I can,t help you with 12v make of tv.,but i would advise if you have mains sockets ,to go for a 230 v tv. Although lights ect will last a while on battery, 12 v tv can be quite a drain on a battery, but that all depends on how much tv you plan to watch and how long your breaks are for. That is unless you have an on board charger from the mains ,in which case you would be on hook up and may as well have a mains tv.
Hi, we got (2008) a Tevion 19" from Aldi. Nowhere on the outside of the box does it state that it is 12volt. It is both mains and 12v.....This is a fantastic little tool. It has more than served us well...and during digital switchover was loaned to 4 homes within our village, whilst sorting the equipment for each of those homes. Great picture, not too large for a van....and cheap. Next time they have them in, ask to see inside the box, if they have not decided to add that it is 12v as well. I would agrre as above...if on hook up, use mains. The fact that this is both, makes it double the reason to keep your eyes peeled at ALDI.
thanks guys....we are always on mains and use a normal telly but the new van hasnt got a plug socket near to where we want the telly only the 12v thing so was thinking about a 12v telly....tried using an adapter on the telly but couldnt hear the telly due to the noise of the fan from adapter.
I also use TVs bought from Aldi, with no problems at all. Most portable TVs are 12V, so you just have to make sure that the transformer is in the power lead, If it is, you just need a cheap lead, from such as Maplins, to plug it into your 12V socket.
If you look around you will find that many 'normal' TV's actually run from 12V via an adapter. When we go away we leave the mains adapter at home and just run it from the 12V.
Many people seem to say you should have a specific 12V caravan TV, but we have never had any problems running it from 12V

Couldn't you just take an extension lead? I have a couple for different things in my van as the plug sockets are too far away.
already got extension leads everywhere, out into awning for my son who sleeps in the annex (AKA the pit of doom!!!!), also into the awning for slowcooker, coolbox and coffee maker.......think we will just get a new telly as it will be easier as husband doesnt like any of the adapters (and im getting fed up of taking the ones he buys back to the shops for refunds)...
If you use a domestic 12v tv and cconnect it to your vans 12v supply you should buy a regulated 12v adapter as your van could be putting up to 14.2v out depending on the charger and battery condition.

I've never had any problems with any of my TVs when using the van's built-in charger - never tried it with the engine running in my campervan though. I think they are a lot more voltage tolerant than some people seem to think.
