I appreciate that other phones / contracts / service providers will differ, but I was just pointing out that it is worth checking before you use it in case it's not fully inclusive.

Before I used it I googled it and got mixed messages from various forums so I checked directly with Vodafone. I was told that my contract (which is an iPhone and a reasonably recent contract) included tethering. So as long as I didn't go over my data allowance, it would be OK.

So I used it a couple of times and then I got a charge on my bill. I contacted Vodafone again to query it and confusion reigned. They refunded the charge as I'd obviously been misinformed by them, but I ended up speaking to 3 or 4 different departments before I got a straight answer. Although my contract included tethering, it only means it includes (for free) the capability to use it. Actual use of the service costs extra.

Completely agree with Inca10 just check with your mobile provider to ensure no additional charges are applied for tethering. Also check what your data allowance is and the likely costs if you go over the allowance...

We've tethered both my O2 phone and my son's 3 phone on the laptops, tablets etc with no problems and no extra charges. We do it turning on the wi fi hot spot on the phone rather than tethering with a USB (don't know if this makes any difference). The 3 phone has always had a signal even when the O2 didn't and 3 give much better packages with unlimited data allowances (in my experience).

Rabble like you I have never been charged for tethering my mobile phone. However on reading Inca10 post and doing some quick internet research some providers do charge (T mobile for instance).

Also the sim/price plan (particularly if this was arranged before June 2011) and if you own an Iphone can affect if you get charged for tethering.

Rabble and I have never been charged but unfortunately it looks it can happen. If you are unsure then a quick call to your mobile operator to check might be worth it.

Hi.

Just looked at FON as David suggests above and looks like any one can use it as long as you have a broadband conection at home. Depends on the cover I suppose.

The BT shared WiFi coverage only really works in city centers etc. As the WiFi signal will only have a radius of around 40 meters from the router. Unless the campsite owner is using a BT network and the signal is strong enough you would be lucky to find a signal on a campsite....

The 3g mobile wifi router i have, the T-mobile 6 months intrnet for £20 is fine if your just internet browsing, emails, facebook, etc, but if you want heavier usage for downloading, youtube, streaming, etc I have got a pay as you go 3 sim  which for £15 top up you get;

  • 300 minutes
  • 3000 texts
  • All-you-can-eat data
  • It only lasts for 30 days but when theres 4 of you all wanting wifi and heavy usage its not bad especially if your doin a trip for a week or 2 and you get 300 mins & 3000 txts so you can stick the sim into a handset and use these too.

    Ive got to admit that in certain areas reception can vary and ive had it with t-mobile  and vodafone but my brother inlaw has always been on 3 and he always gets a good 3g signal.

    Thanks,

    Richard.
