I've never tried the doubles (bed or SIM), so feel free to shoot me down, but I just can't see the beauty of them, myself.
Providing the bed pod is of a suitable size, of course, go for singles. If need be, go extra wide, both for beds and SIMs.... and sleeping bags for that matter.
Butt them up side by side, with an inch gap so not actually touching.
Pro's?
Any movement will not affect partner one bit.
If one wants 4 season bag, and one is happy with 3 season, no problem. Same goes if one needs to go extra wide envelope, whilst the other prefers a mummy bag.
Same with SIMs. One not happy with 5cm? Get ONE 10cm!
Just seems so much more options are available, if you keep things single.
Fire away! :-)

we have a double... and yes the center bar is noticeable... but we are retired so it does not really bother us, we use single bags this time of year..it's warmer...if you really want double then perhaps not camp beds..

The thought of two singles, or a double with a central bar, was always the dealbreaker for us. So we've gone for a raised aerobed double. Not used in anger yet, but preliminary testing shows it's holding air. Cost almost the same as campbed/s plus decent SIM's. We'll see.
I can see the advantages with the campbeds though, air insulation, and space underneath. Maybe the best thing is the old style fold-out guestbed with mattress. But who's got space to load one of those?
brickiemum, I suppose you could order a double and SIM online and try it, then if no good wizz them back under distance selling regs?

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

We were fed up after even aerobed let us down so went for two single 10mm SIMS with a decent matress topper from john lewis. We were very comfy last summer when we went away for a month.

We have ordered a Vango double 10cm sim. It's not landed yet so can't comment on how good it is but our double sleeping bag is our favourite camping item. Sometimes we even cuddle up at home in it lol

We have a double & hubby is 6ft 4". We have a double serenity sim which we then cover with a fitted sheet. just cotton in summer & a woolly one for colder nights. sheepskin. This has the effect of stopping the sim moving. Also it means that no poles come through. once we have it set up it is perfect. We got this set up last season. in fact it was so good that on the 1st morning of using it as my hubby woke up he thought, "must get up & go downstairs & get breakfast" before he realised he was camping, this shows how comfortable he was. wouldn't change for the world.

By far the best option if you go for the double bed is two 7-10cm single SIM's. The reason is the centre bar is higher than the fabric you sleep on so if you use a double SIM its raised in the middle over the centre bar which in turn makes the SIM slope slightly away from the middle bar. If you go for single SIM's of the thicker style they sit well between the side and middle bar and sort of evens out the surface so you get a nice flat area on the same level either side.
I really hope that sort of made sense...
Also, buy some Kampa Big Feet as these are great to put on the feet of the bed to spread the load and not damage the groundsheet.

Positioning x 9 Big Feet will likely take longer to do than putting the bed up?!
Maybe next season Outwell will produce this with a design modification: with flat disc feet pre-attached, to spread the load and so reduce risk of damage to the SIG (especially as most modern tents - and all Outwells - now have this feature)?
