Hi MadMum, the Mk2 zafira has a maximum roof loading of 75 kg. see full spec sheet.
well cycle carrier on the roof should work for kids bikes then? My two kids bikes (14" and 16") only weigh 24kg which would leave plenty to take into account the bars and frame (which are usually very light)Even adding in 2 adult bikes would only take the total weight to 60kg (based on the bikes in my family obviously)
Hope that means you can use this solution and gives a few more shopping options regarding trailer size. I think it will be what we do when we start taking the bikes with us.

I've just remembered you said lifting them was an issue. Perhaps 2 kids bikes on roof (should be easy to lift if you stand on something??) Then 2 adult bikes on your existing rear carrier. Tent in the boot (I would never put it in a roofbox, heavy items can literally break the box to bits if you break quickly)
That leaves you with just other kit for the trailer.

Loading wise,I would've thought that the tent should go over the axle of the trailer,as low as possible..and not in the boot!?(..especially as MadMum says it's a big un and takes up a third of their (8'x4')trailer..?
If they're going to be lugging a trailer that big, they want be be keeping the loading of the rear end of the car as light as possible...
When it comes to lugging camping stuff and loading trailers etc, just because something can be squeezed in or can be lashed onto something,it doesn't necessarily mean it's safe to do so...
I'm sure we've all seen cars & trailers hammering down the motorways of a Bank Holiday, which have been grossly overloaded, with the back seats crammed and with bikes and windbreaks bungeed to them..with the tail ends all but scraping the ground....
MadMum,as you've already got a big trailer, why don't you just look at fixing a "car roof" type bike rack across the top of that?(it'd be a lot lower than on the car)...or even just laying the bikes flat on the top of the trailer and securing them with "proper" ratchet straps?(not something from Poundland!)..but I certainly wouldn't be looking to fit your existing rack to the rear of the trailer,as someone suggested because it would/could cause all sorts of instabilty problems...
Edit: Ooops! Just realised that you haven't actually bought the trailer yet..
(But I'd still be looking at mounting the bikes over the trailer).

I think it would depend on the trailer they decide on pepe, loading the bikes above the trailer is perfect on a wide but low trailer but not in a narrower trailer with highsides. (whole COG issue)
I prefer my steel poled tent in the car boot (estate car, cargo net separating from passenger compartment and still ratcheted down to the load securing points as I'm more nervous of that weight in the trailer.
I just think opting for such a massive trailer just to get the bikes on top will, in the long run, restrict your camping adventures. Large tent + large trailer (that will not store on end presumably) + car on pitch will be a squeeze even on large pitches.

Had a Zafira, and putting kids bike on is not really a problem. Had 2 heavy mountain bikes, which was a lot more troublesome. I always put light stuff in the roofbox anyway, so all the bedding etc.
I tried everything I could to avoid a trailer for a couple of reasons, so ended up with a Grade Espace for 2+2. Seems extreme, but it was either that, a VW van or a pick-up.

Oh yes,I fully agree..I'd misunderstood... ...I thought that MadMum had already bought a trailer with an 8'x4'bed(and at that size, would probably've been of a low, sturdy "builders" type)..
To be honest,I don't like this idea of bolting 3ft+ plywood sides onto relatively small camping trailers...and then fasten bikes or roofboxes on top as well...as you say,the centre of gravity is way out...

I would just like to support Pepe on this. I see thy are now all having side extension. These used to be called greedy boards. On a narrow trailer especially, they are a bad idea
If you then expect to stack bikes on top, that's a step too far.
I think the wide trailer in this case may be a trailer tent with the insides taken out. The sides will not be very strong anyway.
I also think people are too keen on putting bikes on a tow bar mounted rack when a trailer is being towed. Unless you have a really high towbar load, you are going to end up with problems.

Hi Jim
I have looked back upon some of my other pondering posts and see you have been helpful enough to offer some advice there too.
I was just wondering, As it looks as though you are very experienced towing and other such matters, as I have seen your name pop up on similar weight ratio/85% rule etc, what would you do if you were me with our current arrangements?
To summarise, we have a Camel trailer Swtt71, the Zafira, which is a 1.8 petrol with a noseweight and max roof weight of 75kg, two adult bikes and two children's bikes. We also own the Saris Bones RS bike carrier which will only tKe two bikes when trailer is hooked on.
I would really appreciate your view here, even if it be safer to leave the bikes at home. Safety is paramount to me, if the car doesn't stop because we are overloaded then it is kind of a serious problem!!!
Thanks ever so much. Off to work now with 26 exciteable children so i will have a sneaky look when I return home to se if there is any expert advice from somebody with somewhat more experience in this field than me!
Thank you and have a great day.

Last year I had a box trailer that was 3mx1.2mx1.5 and that's without the hitch, we did take everything we needed to France last year, I've never had any issues with leaving it on the pitch and we had a vango Maritsa 700 tent, when we went somewhere where we couldn't fit the trailer on the pitch we left it in the car part and put a wheel clamp on it, the trailer was just under the max height to be class 1 on French till roads too :) I sold it last year for a lot more then I paid for it!

Jim,
I have extended my trailer height by 10" and then fitted cycle racks on the lid. Surely the weight of the tent and poles etc in the trailer will be ok to balance the bikes on the top.
