We picked up our first van yesterday and on the whole it was great. The car had no problem pulling it up hills etc. Our only problem was when we were driving on uneven roads (even part of the motorway). The car seemed to go up and down as if it were on a roller coaster.
Is this normal and something we will have to get used to or is there a problem with our set-up?
Empty caravans do tend to bounce a bit but as Birdman says once loaded correctly the it should improve. The type of suspension used on a caravan is not as compliant as say in a car so it will always seem firm.
If you mean you had just collected it empty from the dealers & did not check noseweight(dealer should have helped you with this so out so 0/10 for service if this was the case)then this will explain the bouncing. Load the caravan up with your gear & get noseweight more or less correct for your car(most will be about 70kg)& you should be ok.
Noseweight figure for your car, often marked as 'towbar download' or similar should be in your car handbook.
Used to get this myself when towing in country lanes, put it down to the road where the rear axle went down a low bit and came up again followed be the wheels of the van..
