I have recently bought a second hand Al-Ko AKS 1300 stabiliser but without fitting instructions.

Does anyone have a spare fitting booklet or prepared to copy one I will pay all costs involved and postage.

Haven't got a brochure but would imagine that fitting is the same as the 2004 which is as follows

You need to remove the two transverse bolts lift off the old coupling replace it with the stabiliser hitch and replace the two bolts

Easy ----BUT

You do not want to release the damper or it will be difficult to get back in line

The kit comes with a drift that you carefully use to tap out the bolt holding the damper

You can make one by sawing the head off a bolt of the same thickness as the original and cutting so that the length is the same as the width of the drawbar shaft.

The ends of the drift will be flush with the sides of the drawbar shaft when in position

You can then remove the other bolt and swap the coupling carefully tapping out the drift with the original bolt as you replace it.

Hope that helps ---you need the Alko ball if you haven't got a swan neck one

Thanks John, very helpful. Just one thing, I have seen some reference to "shims" being provided with a new stabiliser. Do you know what these are for?

The round friction pads have a shaft (like a mushroom shape) and there are shims on the shaft to ensure the correct pressure on the ball when the lever is pressed down and also that the pressure is the same on both sides I suppose.

The stabiliser will come set up right from Alko

may be buying caravan with an AKS 1300 fitted.......

looking at thread, does this mean I will have to get new Alko ball..........Had witter tow-bar fitted couple of years ago, with twin electrics.......but have only used for camping/general purpose trailer.

Dont know if tow ball was witter too.....cant remember whether it was in witter pack....think so, as was the witter tow ball cover with witter on.....of course

If it is a bolt on ball you will need the Alko ball to give the articulation space needed for the bigger coupling head

Swan necks are OK

I E-mailed Alko a while ago as ir was difficult to convince someone on another website that the Alko ball was needed

It is needed and I have seen the damage done to the normal towball as the neck is not long enough and will be gouged by the coupling with risk of damage to both

The Alko ball costs about £20

I have an alko 1300 and a witter towball with a 1" spacer.  I used this combination all last year for about 8 trips covering over 1000 miles and have not had a problem.  The coupling has adequate movement and there is no sign of damage to the towball.

That's interesting Adam

Alko sell the 1300 with the extended neck towball

The one I saw in Brittany was a 2004 and had only been towed from the German caravan dealer to Brittany and there was severe gouging of the neck below the towball

Obviously if you haven't had the problem and are happy with the set up them stick with it

I personally would do what Alko say because they could invalidate the warranty with some justification if the coupling were damaged in any way

£20 on a towball compared to the cost of the outfit is minimal for peace of mind

On reflection the damage noted with the 2004  could have been caused by the front/rear friction pads/housing that the 1300 does not have
