Hi, trying to prepare for my first camping trip a single parent! I'm after a cool box that can be plugged into the mains and also the car but am bewildered by the choices. Any advice please?

Many thanks x

Hey there Nessynessy they are a terrible price but my friend has the one aldi does and she is really happy with it its about £40. I overload with frozen bottles of water which the dogs can drink as they melt. I just use a normal coolbox out of home-bargins and it cost me £9 for a 24 litre. Any food I take is frozen anyway so I eat it s it defrosts!!! Depending on where you camp there my be fridge facilities already onsite. I would love an electric one but its too pricey for me just now. If you are new to camping I would think about it first as you will be spending a fortune on gear and you may decide you dont need one

I have a mobicool 24l and this is mains & car operated. I find this great as it can accommodate large 2litre bottles, which others don't, (due to the lid having holes for the top of the bottle to fit into.) I would have liked the larger version, but just can't squeeze anymore into our car!

Please bear in mind a lot of these coolboxes will only cool items within Max 20 °C under ambient temperature ie. if we get a hot day in summer and its 28°C for example, then it will only cool to 8°C. But I guess that's wishful thinking!! :-)

I don't just use mine for camping, I also find it useful to transport icecream etc back from supermarket on warm days.

I have a 28L thermo-electric cool box by Campingaz, sufficient for most days in this country as it can cool to 18 deg C below the ambient temperature.

Weve had a waeco tropicool for a number of years had no problems with it, cools really quickly and not too noisy, infact we turn it off overnite and things in it are still cold in the morning

I second the Waeco Tropicool. We have had one for a few years and its been faultless so far. It is also useful in the car as it turns on or off to keep the temperature so is not on all the time, useful for saving power. It runs fairly quietly as well. You can set various levels of hot and cold and it will allegedly cool to up to 30 degrees below ambient.

The downside is that they are not cheap.

If you just want a cheap electric coolbox £30-£50 then a few are 12v/240v but most are 12v only. For another £15 or so you can buy a coolbox specific transformer that allows coolbox to run from mains. If you want a much better camping fridge then you need to be paying a lot more, £150 or so for the 3way type.
