It just sounds like a typical dealer of old caravans, this is why it is better to buy a caravan of this age cheaper off ebay, this will be where he bought yours I guess. Why should he care about your caravan? I doubt he is a caravanner & I doubt he knows anything about them, or wants to know, all he sees is profit. If the spends anything on caravans he buys in then that cuts his profit.
I would suggest you contact a mobile fitter to come & service it as I doubt it has been touched for yrs. Also you need to check the age of tyres(google for info on this)if over 5yrs old or if sidewalls are cracked you need to change them pronto or they could blow out at motorway speeds.
A new water tank can be sourced no problem. Google CAK tanks or you can have connector for external Aquarol fitted instead. A large caravan shop might even stock suitable tanks. I agree its pointless going back to the dealer, he will have no mechanical knowledge of caravans & just fob you off. You just have to carry on from where you are now with help & advice from this forum.
Just regard an old caravan as somewhere to sleep thats better than a tent, you can't really compare it with a new £20k jobbie, this works for me, I don't even bother with a water system in mine, I took the tap off & just pour water from a container into the sink, same as I did when I used a tent.
Main thing is that that wheel bearings/brakes/hitch is serviced & in good nick & tyres are fairly new, then you are good to go any distance, I tow my 80s Monza down to southern France every summer, no probs.
