Hi,

We have just bought our first ever caravan and are trying to get to grips with it. One thing that surprised me was the water system. I have only ever been in a van with aqua rolls and my van doesn't have this. It has a water tank under one of the front seats and a blue tube going into it with a white circular thing attached - I'm assuming this is the pump!?

We got it home and took the van apart - it came from a dealer and was supposed to be serviced etc so imagine my surprise when I found that there was stagnant water in the container and the entire tray that the container sits in was also full of water. Hubby removed the container via the slot to outside and tells me it's cracked. It's in really bad condition and even if not cracked I wouldn't be drinking anything from it lol!

Not sure what to do? Would love to buy a new aqua roll and use that but there is no connection for it as the van only has the square hole for the container to slide in and out.

I'm not going back to the dealer as I don't trust that he has done what he said he would eg the van was supposed to be serviced however when I tested the smoke alarm there was no battery in it!!

Anyone have any ideas of where I would begin to source either a new tank or how to change it with minimum costs involved?

I also would like to sterilise the rest of the system but am not sure how?? The top of the pump is rusted although hubby says its just the clip but surely when it's designed to be submerged in water it shouldn't rust??

Sorry for the list of questions - we are tent people and this is a whole new world for us!! Should add that it's a 1994 sterling Europa - i know its old and I def expect problems but this wasn't one of them!

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Christie :)

Oh how awful Christie   I can imagine your excitement at buying your first caravan & thinking that you were safer buying from a dealer than an ebay seller. Then your disappointment when you found this problem.

I really think that you should contact the dealer & explain your findings, and ask them to supply you with a new water container which you will fit yourself. I wouldn't let them get away with such a shoddy service & selling a caravan which is not fit for purpose. Why should you have to pay out extra yourselves to put things right which should have been sorted by the dealer

Totally agree with JK, use your rights and get the Van sorted either by the dealer or at the dealers cost. Worst case demand your money back and go somewhere else, currently the 'Van isn't fit for purpose and it's up to the seller to sort it to your satisfaction.

Thanks for your thoughts and i know you are right but im just not a confrontational person so worry about taking it back. i bought from a dealer as its our first van and i wanted to be lead by someone who knows what they are talking about.

It does come with a 3 month warranty - do you think that would cover things like the cracked water holder and rusty pump etc?? The floor was wet around the tray but he assured me he had checked it for damp - its all a bit of a disaster :(

He was a lovely guy and emphasised that it was covered for appliances but not for the awning and things like that.

Would a smoke alarm be covered in a service??

Just trying to think about what angle to approach him from as I don't want to go in guns a blazing but we are disappointed. It was sold with a full starter pack but when I asked where the electric lead was he said it didn't come in with one and he hadn't got one. He checked the towing lights when we hooked it on - just makes me doubt the validity of his service??

The gas and electrics do concern me as surely there is more to servicing them than checking the appliances work?

I have a 5 and 1 year old so safety is my main concern. (On a selfish note I wanted to take it away next weekend and I'm gutted as I don't think this will be possible now lol.)

Depends what he means by a service, if it's a service to make it road-worthy then no.

BUT

He should have checked it all properly (I'd forgive him the smoke alarm as easy to miss), especially things like gas, electrics and water.

The water tank should DEFINITELY be working as it's an integral part of the van and the expectation is for it to be a fully functioning component. As such it's not sold 'fit for purpose' and I would go back, ask for money back, and go somewhere else.

When you say stagnant water was it full of green slime? If not I would drain it down and flush it through then put some Puriclean and follow the instructions. Leave it overnight and then drain it down again. Flush it through with clean water and drain again and you should be ok.

We do this to our van every spring. Some do and some don't so it is a personal matter. We never drink from the system anyway so all water is either boiled in the kettle or used for washing up.

You can clean it easy enough. I would have done it anyway rather than trust the dealer.

It just sounds like a typical dealer of old caravans, this is why it is better to buy a caravan of this age cheaper off ebay, this will be where he bought yours I guess. Why should he care about your caravan? I doubt he is a caravanner & I doubt he knows anything about them, or wants to know, all he sees is profit. If the spends anything on caravans he buys in then that cuts his profit.

I would suggest you contact a mobile fitter to come & service it as I doubt it has been touched for yrs. Also you need to check the age of tyres(google for info on this)if over 5yrs old or if sidewalls are cracked you need to change them pronto or they could blow out at motorway speeds.

A new water tank can be sourced no problem. Google CAK tanks or you can have connector for external Aquarol fitted instead. A large caravan shop might even stock suitable tanks. I agree its pointless going back to the dealer, he will have no mechanical knowledge of caravans & just fob you off. You just have to carry on from where you are now with help & advice from this forum.

Just regard an old caravan as somewhere to sleep thats better than a tent, you can't really compare it with a new £20k jobbie, this works for me, I don't even bother with a water system in mine, I took the tap off & just pour water from a container into the sink, same as I did when I used a tent.

Main thing is that that wheel bearings/brakes/hitch is serviced & in good nick & tyres are fairly new, then you are good to go any distance, I tow my 80s Monza down to southern France every summer, no probs.

The water in the tank was green and slimy and so was the water that had been sitting in the tray under it. The top of the pump was rusted that goes into the water tank. I wasn't sure if I was being too fussy or if this would come under not fit for purpose. The floor was also wet around the tank which worries me.

Should I expect to get a certificate to say the gas is safe and a certificate to say it has been serviced?

To be fair to him he seems a really nice guy and is def a caravanner and knows all the workings as he is also a mobile fitter and repair man so I think that perhaps he just hasn't put the time into this van or perhaps I'm expecting too much and this is what happens at the lower end of the market? I could def have got it cheaper off gumtree and wish I'd had the confidence to just do a private sale.

Hubby is going to phone and chat to him about the water tank later on so fingers crossed :)

Thanks for all your thoughts,

Christie

If he has had a proper service done you should get a report, signed by a qualified person, showing what was done\checked.

When you buy a 20yr old caravan you should see it as just the start of a project, if you can get a new tank out of him then all good but can you trust him to have removed hubs, regreased/replaced bearings as necessary, adjusted brakes, is hitch damper ok etc? Anybody can write anything on bits of paper, what you need to do know its all been done.

Even if gas appliances have been checked its only a snapshot of how it is now, not next week. You need to check all this stuff on a ongoing basis, do you think he cleaned out the fridge burner? I doubt it.

Take it back, or if he's mobile, get him to come to you and replace the tank, etc., and make sure it's working before he goes. That should definitely be part of the warranty.

Did a 1994 Sterling Europa have an on-board water tank as standard?

Or is it something a previous owner has fitted?

ok, he told you he had checked it for damp - but it was wet???? the leaking water tank would create a damp area/stained area. you can show it wasn't checked for damp and found to be clear. I wouldn't bother asking for a new water tank, I would be asking for a full refund on the basis that you found additional damp areas around the leaking water tank and heading to the local trading standards dept

please don't tell me you paid cash to the dealer?

if he wont refund/offer replacement, I would park outside his pitch with a sign on the caravan, offering a damp and dodgy caravan for sale - recently purchased from a 'local dealer' - no need to even name him, and try and get some publicity - you might still get nothing other than the satisfaction of actually doing something rather than nothing!

if you don't want to go and confront him direct, use the internet and start a blog and direct him to it, he gets the choice of giving you your money back and all he has lost is one sale. or the potential loss of lots of sales due to adverse publicity
