I have a camping trip planned at the start of summer. Just a couple of nights with my two boys(6 and 11)and their football squad. I'll be taking one possibly two pop ups for us three and was looking at pitching them under a tarp for extra weatherproofing and an area to eat in and shade my bald head. I have a selection of tarps but would need a couple of poles and i'm set. I've only seen one pic online of this and that one had the tarp resting on the top of the tent. I would like to have space between the tent and tarp if poss as im afraid of contact leaks. Is this kind of set up wise? The crappy UK weather concerns me a little with just a pop up so a quick n easy tarp kit was going to put me at ease until i saw nobody else has done it! Or am i looking in the wrong places?
Last year i had the pop up under a tarp but it was so close it was like a second skin! I'd like a bit more sheltered room outside the tent as well as the wet weather protection.
I'm kinda leaning towards the 4th pic but with poles and big enough to shelter two pop ups. I'll have a tool about in the yard. If I get it cracked ill post some pics.

Thanks again.
Welcome Mr White.
With the poles in mind, maybe something like this?...
Set up a ridge line first...
and hang the tarp from that, using small karabiner's and prussic knots. (See end of this post for vid link).
That way, if the wind picks up, you can whip down the tarp in literally a minute, but all the frame/ridge line stays put, ready for a break in the weather. The tarp will go back up in 3 minutes, all guyed again.
Even though I understand you want a gap, contact between the two fabrics will not cause a leak, as the pop up's are synthetic and proofed inside unlike most canvas tents. An air gap and more space is the better option though as you already know.
------------- Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
I struggled to put up my 3.75m x 3.75m tarp over my Escala 4 in stormy weather and soggy ground while I was up in Glencoe last year, by trying to put the tarp up one pole at a time using 4 poles.
The wind kept lifting the tarp and pulled even the Deltas off the ground!!!
Gave up eventually after being soaked in the rain for a good hour or so.
I shall try your method, by putting up the poles first to set up a ridge line and use the Prussic knots to hook up the canopy over the tent etc...
With such a big canopy, the dog and I can sit merrily in the shade.
Just need to have some sunny and hot weather to make it worth the effort!

Just to note that according to Jim, the prussic knot works better if it is thinner than the ridge line it is attached to.
On that note, I intend to change my ridge line from the one in my pics, to the thicker hi viz one I use for the guys (I have 2 x 30m reels of the stuff, anyway!!!)
I have no reason to doubt Jim's greater experience and wisdom..... actually, I hang on his every word, but don't tell 'im!!

Don't know who was the original contributor to the ridge line first pitching method for the canopy and/or the use of the Prussic knots to attach the canopy to the ridge line, however, I thank you all!

I'm now thinking that having just a small gap over the pop up would in theory act as a partial second skin? Previous pitching with the tarp almost wrapped round the pop up I think restricted rear ventilation, but even with 3 of us in there the condensation wasn't really an issue. Having the tarp suspended with a lower side just over the tent could possibly reduce the moisture by having a warmer layer of air between tent/tarp.
Itneeds to stop s**tting it down so I can check my tarp stash!
Had a bash at this earlier. I got a ridge line up but it seemed a little slack. What sort of knot is used to tie the line to the spike? The tarpaulins I have are either too small or too big. I think I'm going to get a 10x12ft B&Q tarpaulin which should give me the coverage I want. The ones I have are 8x6 and 12x24!!!
The poles I bought are HiGear telescopic ones from Go Outdoors. £8 each. I went for these over the Vango ones cos I have more control over the height. They dont pack away as small but as I'm not carrying them on my back its not an issue.
Dont they have a tarp above the tent with a gap in hot countries? Give the tent some shade to keep it cool.Am i hoping or what lol.
We had to throw an emergency tarp over our tent last week as it leaked in.It was one of the plastice bulider tarps and made a lot of noise in the wind.
Tent sorted now with some tlc at home
I've sorted a simple set up using a cheapo 10x12 tarpaulin, the extending Hi Gear poles and some Poundland ropes. I'm not using a ridgeline at the mo but it'll be something to try at a later date when the carabiners arrive I can't post a pic as the site doesn't use Tapatalk.
The tarp takes 15 mins to pitch including the pop up and takes less than 10 mins to pack away.
Lidl Pop Up £25
10x12 tarp £6
Hi Gear poles £16
Ropes £1
Pegs £1
This setup gives me speed of pitch and pack. Dry shelter. Somewhere the little un can play. A place to cook. it maybhelp a little with condensation and I can still sit outside and socialise even when it's howling down.
