My car has little holes to locate the roof bars into, in the inside of the door frame, so they can't be installed in the wrong place. I have just got a roof bag so will be checking it fits ok in the morning.

gap between my roof bars is 26.5 inches, determined by the fixing points on my roof box. 34 inches would be ok if you have a kayak

We have a roofbag (with no supporting bars in the base) which we sit on top of a luggage tray like this:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_763651_langId_-1_categoryId_165500
which sits on the roofbars, stops the bag sagging onto the roof as the distance between bars is too long for most items we want to place in roofbag.
