Do to the increase in electrical devices we now take away that need charging (mobiles, iPad, laptop, camera, etc.), I was considering trying a leisure battery for those times & sites where EHU isn't available.
Is this feasible and can anyone recommend a decent battery?
Having looked into them it isn't clear whether it's a very practical idea in a tent...and there would need to be some kind of adapter / transformer to provide a standard 3-pin socket.
We have recently got this item http://www.maplin.co.uk/5-in-1-jump-starter-with-portable-power-224871
Have only used it so far for a long weekend but charged 2x phones and ran a light and small car dvd player off it, using only about 10% of the battery. It has 2x 12v and 1 plug, we tend to use the 12v if possible as it uses less of the battery.
It does have mixed reviews but we have no intention of using it as a jumpstarter (hopefully!) so thought the power would be enough for charging/light needs.
That does look good, thanks. I wouldn't have thought of a jump-starter! I've just been looking at the traditional battery style options and they all look like a bit too much faffing around. Space in the car is also an issue but not sure they come much smaller
The jump start devices typically don't have a very large capacity battery.
We've just done 2 weeks in france on a 60A/h leisure battery and half discharged it. I'd recommend getting 12v car chargers for all your devices you want to recharge rather than using a 240v inverter as this will be more efficient.
I connected a 4 way cigarette lighter splitter to our battery with crocodile clips.
We ran our main tent light, charged phones and tablets and ran a 12v dog shower occasionally.
So a proper leisure battery would be my recommendation for anything other than a weekend. You will need a smart charger to charge it as well.
Thanks for the advice jamesgmg - usually we go away for 2-4 days at a time, but occasionally longer. I'll keep researching the batteries as there's usually a queue of things for the in-car charger!
