Hi All,
I would be very grateful for some advice, last week we went camping for the first time in years, just got rid of an old campervan. We have a double burner and grill connected to a 4.5 kg Butane bottle and regulator.
We had used it with no problems on the Saturday evening and left it outside overnight. On Sunday morning I went to light it , the burner lit OK then I realised there was a flame coming out from the side where the gas tube screws into the side of the cooker. I must admit I wasn't sure what to do, I vaguely remember reading that you should not turn off the gas as the flame could track back and ignite the cylinder. My OH came over and immediately turned the gas off at the cylinder, it went out and all was fine, luckily this was outside of the tent. Was this the correct action and by leaving the system outside can the connections become damp and loose? I am going to leak test the connection before using it again but would welcome any advice. I had always thought that the large cylinders were the safest option but now I am sceptical.
Many Thanks, Nicky

The flame won't track down the pipe they need an oxygen supply to burn there no oxygen in the pipe. Most likely the connection was not tight enough to begins with.

Is this an old grill Item or new?

Welcome to the forum.

Doesn`t sound like the gas bottle as you said the leak was where the gas pipe screws to the side of the cooker. As MankySteve says check the fitting where the pipe connects to the cooker.

Did you have a jubilee clip securing it at both the bottle regulator and grill inlet and if so check it is tight?

Like all equipment it needs checked and maintained. Loading and unloading can loosen the jubilee clip. Doesn't sound like you necessarily have a problem if you just get it checked over and tightened up. I would still trust this style of cooker 100% more than suitcase style, having witnessed what happens when one explodes.

And also....do you know how to leak test it? Obviously not with a match You need to apply soapy water to the connection and watch for bubbles forming.

Thanks everyone, it was an old grill. We had put on new jubilee clips on but I hadn't checked them after unloading. I will tighten them up and I was going to leak test with washing up liquid!!
The grill inlet has a screw fitting and we had just bought a new nut and gas pipe, can you use PTFE tape or similar to ensure the connection is gas tight?

Got mine from Toolstation I don't think there's one local to you, try a plumbers merchants but make sure it's suitable for gas. Bishops Itchington isn't too far from me if you have no luck.

Hi Calvin,
Popped into B&Q on the way home, they had some of the PTFE for gas use in there.
Many thanks for your kind offer.
Cheers
