Makro - Alba 15" LCD TV  (ALCD15TVX1) from 30th March

£160 + VAT

Does the comet/curry one work on 12 volt. I know theyuse a transformer and run on 12 volt but that is not quite the same thing. I nearly bought one in Dixons but I asked if it would work on 12 volt input. The Bozo in the shop said yes of course - all i needed was a lead from the 12 volt plug to the mains "kettle" end of the transformer! Somehow I don't think 12 volts plugged through a step down transformer will produce........... er.........12 volts was my reply. At least the manager admitted he did not know! And he did not seem that interested in finding out. Are sales so good that they are not bothered about making another. Why oh why do these stores not employ people who learn their product knowledge properly.

I suspect that direct 12 volt will not produce enough to kick start the TV but would be very interested if anyone can tell me otherwise.

Cheapest I've seen yet.

We took the plunge last weekend. purchased an Alba 15inch from Argos at 199 notes.

It will take 12volts / 240 volts and is compatible with all of Europe as well.

Bargain as far as Im concerned

Unfortunately, John Lewis' price promise - 'never knowingly undersold', only applies in their stores and only in comparison with other high-street prices, not the internet. I checked this out on their website before I ruled out buying from them.

I went ahead and bought the Philips 15" LCD from Amazon for £299 and am totally chuffed with it.  It has virtual surround sound (some LCD TVs have pathetic sound from tiny speakers), and a built-in FM radio which saves taking a separate radio.

No doubt other retailers will drop their prices down to the Amazon level before long, or even lower, but at least I will have had the use of my TV for a while by then!
