Here's a thought for you all to consider..... how many of you stick your joint of topside straight into the oven, and how many pre-heat the oven first?
or..... why is there a "Fast Freeze" option on my home freezer?

I'm Here....

Mucker….did you do science at school?

The difference with warming an oven and pre-cooling a cool box is miles apart (150oC). An oven maybe trying to reach temperatures of 180oC or higher. Whereas cooling a cool box may only need a reduction of 20oC or so depending on the ambient temperature.

The following information below is taken from the Igloo Maxcold FAQ page. Funny enough it doesn't mention anything about pre-cooling the box before use other than to store it at room temperature (or lower if possible). Not one word of pre-cooling or swapping ice blocks or anything else…. weirdo

How do I keep things cold longer inside my cooler?
For optimal performance from your cooler:

*Store the cooler at room temperature or lower for at least 12 hours prior to use.

*Pre-chill food and beverage items in a refrigerator or freezer.

*Use large cubed ice, blocks of ice, dry ice (wrapped in heavy paper or cloth), or freeze bottles for the optimal chilling of contents in the cooler.

*During use, keep the cooler in a shaded area and away from direct sunlight for optimal performance. Hint: storing the cooler inside a car trunk or on top of warm surfaces may impede its cooling potential.

*During use, it is not necessary to drain the cold water from recently melted ice unless it is causing contents to become soggy. The chilled water, combined with ice, more readily surrounds canned and bottled items and will often help keep contents colder more effectively than the remaining ice alone. Hint: For soft coolers - or hard coolers with soft or loosely wrapped contents - refreezable ice substitutes are effective for cooling without the water associated with melting ice.

*Close the lid immediately after opening and keep it tightly closed when items are not being placed in or removed from the cooler.

Mac. This is killing me but I have had to agree with 2 of Muckers posts already today. Now it looks like this could be a third.
Quote *Store the cooler at room temperature or lower for at least 12 hours prior to use. Doesn't that sort of imply that the colder it is at the start, the better it will perform. Put me straight for Christ sake.

Geoff have you been smoking the funny stuff or taken illicit drugs this afternoon…? Maybe this is why you are feeling an affinity with Mucker.

The word is "store" not add ice to the cool box 48 hours before you depart or other strange rituals (probably involves chickens) which Mucker performs. Funnily enough it doesn’t mention about covering the cool box in tin foil either…

To be honest I fully understand people have different opinions on this one. At least nobody is getting hurt…unless your top lip gets stuck in the freezer compartment whilst getting ice to pre-chill the cool box, but this could happen either way. As long as tin foil is not involved I’m happy.

Isn't anyone bored with all this cool box bo**ox yet?

All I know is, it "seems" to stay colder for longer when I pre chill, and I'm happy to continue with this ritual, until I think otherwise.
Others are, of course, entitled to try it, or laugh it off, in equal measure.

And I know I'm not alone, as I didn't think this up all on my own, yer know..... I first saw it mentioned by A.N. Other, on these very forums.... much like everything else I do/buy/eat/drink/rig up, when camping.... and long may it continue!
