Thought this might be of use to those looking for reliable etailers when shopping for outdoor kit. Granted, experiences can be just one offs, store dependent etc, so this is based on my latest outdoor spree over the last few weeks.
This is how the etailers performed:
summitsonline – PROS: fast delivery, CONS: squashed packaging (courier to blame), but could have packaged better.
Norwichcamping –PROS: None. CONS: no response to emails, chased via phone, price matching is questionable – they’ll price match but only if they put the postage price up (to cover their price match loss) – so I decided not to shop with them.
Taunton Leisure –PROS: Their customer service is professional. You can pay for faster delivery but the charge is hefty. Free delivery for orders £20 upwards CONS: slow delivery on almost all of the delivery options, a used product was supplied (probably a return that wasn’t checked).
Halfords – PROS: delivery to store is free and regardless of incompetency, the prices were competitive. I advise calling ahead before you travel to collect your item just in case of systems errors etc (like happened to me).
CONS: When items are delivered in store, some of the staff members had no idea where to look for the products and would look on the shelves instead.
Marshall Leisure: PROS: fast delivery, well packaged CONS: None.
Blacks: PROS: Great prices CONS: Unreachable, unhelpful, staff not trained – these complaints were rife across their facebook page, oodles of customer complaints – and it took 1 week for them to reply to an email. Delivery was slow.
Tesco: PROS: Great price, can deliver in store for free. CONS: the wait at the Tesco collection desk is at least 15 to 20 minutes excluding queuing.
Singers Outdoors: PROS: Can’t think of one. Probably the only company on the list I won’t use again. CONS: Staff member made errors and was disorganised, packaging was poor, their online system doesn’t accurately tally what’s in stock. Badly packaged gas canisters package – the thin box was crushed on delivery (fault of courier, but they should be using double walled boxes to transport gas or at least padded out single wall boxes).
Leisure Outlet: CONS: Used Thetford toilet was supplied. Poor packaging – camp kitchen was wrapped in black bin bags and was very damaged. PROS: Good customer services, partial credit received for kitchen if we’d keep it. We decided to keep the toilet, as no one keen to take responsibility.
Busy Outdoors: PROS: Great prices, well packaged products, great customer services, fast’ish delivery. CONS: Watch out for their exchange and returns policy – its 7 days, and they generally only exchange on clothes but if you ask for an extension they are generally good at finding a solution to suit everyone.
Amazon: PROS: Packaging good, affordable delivery, know what to expect with them. CONS: None to date.
Argos: PROS: Competitive pricing, can collect in store for free. CONS: None to date.
