We have an electric kettle at home which has the brita filter built in. Can't use it camping because its too powerful and blows the trip every time its used.
You could get a filter jug to fill the kettle with.
Thanks for the suggestions. We do use a water filter at home but don't want the added bulk when camping. And as for paying for drinking water...perish the thought.
There are some very fine mesh metal tea strainers available, so we'll either use one of those or modify a kettle to take the mesh.
Mesh Kettle protector, limescale remover, they come with various names but usually found in hardware shops and pound shops, Cheap, cheerful, works.

Filters do not prevent the kettle from furring up, they simply prevent any scale from being poured from the kettle.
They are purely a sales gimmick and result in a higher concentration of lime being left in the kettle causing increased furring.
We have all been drinking water containing lime for generations without any ill effects.
I live in a hard water area.
I have found that if I put one of the stainless steel pot scourers in the kettle and rinse it out daily I do not get any limescale in the boiled water.

Yes they work, I am from a soft water area, so not used to gritty brews. So the mesh collects the limescale and gets a scrunch and a rinse under the tap when needed.

We live in a very hard water area and we always boil the kettle with fresh water each time & never reboil the water if using it for drinks, use it as soon as it has boiled. Empty any unused water out of the kettle as soon as you can so it is not sitting in there for hours. This helps a lot with preventing the 'funny taste' you can get with hard water. Though it will probably still have a slightly odd taste to those that are used to soft water.
I also de-scale the kettle once a month and do the same to our camping kettle once a season.
