just wondering if anyone knows if a camp stove ( 2 burner and grill - 904 and 907 caming gaz bottles) that is using camping gaz, can be run on propane. i have been told that propane is more effiecient for colder weather.
Also anyone know of a supplier for exchange camping gaz cyclinders in the wrexham area ?
All you need to do is change the regulator which will then allow the stove to run on a different gas (I.E Calor Gas). If you are just camping in the UK then the Calor gas bottles will be cheaper the only downside being they are only available in the UK.
I’m sure other UK Campsite members will be along to give more advice!
As well is two words!

Yes, just get a Calor propane bottle with correct regulator, cut Campingaz regulator off end of hose, attach new regulator with jubilee clip & away you go. Dip end of hose in boiling water to soften to allow regulator nipple to push on. Camping stoves that use separate bottle & regulator on end of hose will run on any bottled gas.
You cannot exchange Campingaz bottles for Calor though. A new Calor bottle is £30 plus cost of gas but if you can find an old empty Calor bottle off boot sale or wherever you can exchange for full from a supplier paying only for gas. Most suppliers will swap between sizes as you will probably want smallest 3.9kg propane bottle for convenience.
The way i understand it now is that, i can either continue to use the stove using the Camping Gaz (Butane) or change to Calor Gas ( Propane or Butane) with the necessary change of regulator.
I can't seem to see any evidence that using Propane is better in any significant way over Butane. Propane does come in larger bottles than the ones i am using, but that only adds to cost and weight.
So overall no real need to change, unless of course someone knows different.
Propane is only really an advantage if you are going to be using it in low temps,ie Winter.
------------- XVI yes?

Cost wise a calor 3.9kg propane or 4.5kg butane is cheaper than the 2.9kg Campingaz 907. So cost is cheaper, added size/weight yes though.
Butane only works down to just above 0 l, propane down to about -30.
Propane also burns slightly hotter, but nothing brilliantly noticeable. I did a direct comparison with boiling 2 litres of water and it was about 40 seconds faster with propane.

Completely agree with DamianL & blueexpo97. If you intend to camp in the winter or colder month’s then propane will definitely be more suitable. The cost difference between Calor gas and Campingaz is almost double but if you intend to camp abroad this maybe an issue as Calor gas is only available in the UK. This could be overcome by ensuring you have enough gas before your trip though..?
Overall the bottom line is you don’t need to change unless you want to. The difference between butane and propane will only be an issue if you camp in the colder months. If space is an issue (it normally is) the Campingaz cylinders are smaller
As an example of cost differences of refills (based on Go Outdoor prices)
£14.39 Calor Butane 4.5kg (£3.20 Kg Gas)
£13.95 Calor Propane 3.9kg (£3.58 Kg Gas)
£22.50 Campingaz 907 2.75kg (£8.18 Kg Gas)

But then the calorific value of Butane is higher so you will burn less gas.
Allowing for the cooling effect upon vapourization the usable temp of butane is actually a few degrees above freezing
True in terms of the burning less gas, but nothing really noticeable. Overall, unless you're camping in winter it really doesn't matter which you use. I personally have a 3.9KG Propane bottle, a 4.5KG Butane and a Campingaz 904 cylinder. Each for different uses.
I haven't yet had a chance to research the effects of Butane at lower temperatures but a friend of mine who fishes in winter has said Butane starts to struggle around 3 and becomes useless around 1 so a fine window there.

Wow... Didn't realise the price differences
I bought 2 bottles for my stove, a 907 and the smaller one. I must have the more expensive Camping gas, but to be fair for the amount of gas I use it isn't a major difference each year in money to use. I want a new gas stove though.... :-)
Anyone know of a good place to compare all the best double burner stoves?
Think I will be sticking with Camping Gas due to the little difference in price
