Please can someone recommend some decent tent pegs to go with a North Ridge Sphinx tent? (I lent mine to someone and for some reason the pegs were returned with the tops bent over!)
Have you done a search on pegs?. There have been many long threads on virtues of different pegs.
Essentially it important to have a range of pegs for different ground conditions, thus avoiding damaging pegs because they are being used for the wrong job.
I can highly recommend the 9" Sunncamp Almighty Tent Pegs go in the ground straight as they have a ridge on the peg, don`t bend and keep the camping set up where it should be.
If you're going to be backpacking with the tent then you'll need lightweight alloy pegs, most decent camping or climbing shops will have a selection.
As to why they had the tops bent over well, that comes of standing on the peg to push it in rather than using a mallet. Very bad practice, it's not ideal for your walking boots either. You can buy lightweight resin mallets for backpacking or find a stone to use, just don't stand on your pegs!
I personally would be asking the person who borrowed the tent to replace the pegs. It is usually possible to straighten pegs out using a mallet and sturdy flat surface but they'll never be quite as good again. Why should you be out of pocket for an act of generosity?
Thanks for the advice and for solving the mystery as to why they have been returned in a different shape. I wonder if she forgot to take a mallet and was too shy to ask to borrow from a fellow camper. I'm hoping my friend will replace the pegs, I just wish that she had had the courtesy to tell me. I've camped for years with the same equipment (around 20 yrs)and very rarely bent a tent peg. This tent is new, as mine is too heavy for back backing, so I am very out of touch with where to obtain things from. You can't feel the pegs on the internet and I don't know what the ones that need replacing are made out of. I shall look in the yellow pages, search for the nearest camping shop and take one of the pegs with me. I will try to straighten them out too, thanks for that advice. I am hoping my friend will get her own tent now, so she won't be asking to borrow again! Thanks again for the replies.
I take it the pegs were aluminium? My friend bought a North Ridge tent last week for Santa Pod. I helped him pitch as hes not really a camper and we bent every single peg, using a mallet. The ground wasn't the best but the pegs were soft as sh**. Saying that, my Vango Chinook tent came with ally pegs which were quickly binned and replaced with steel ones. Like someone said, unless you are back packing it is wise to have a variety of pegs for different ground conditions.
You might find this review of use to identify your pegs.
I've always used the Type 3, my OH's and DS's tents have a set each and I've got a third set that came with my now long dead Vango Oddessy mountain tent and which get used as spares and for the lightweight canopy. They've been very satisfactory but as the review says they can bend very easily.
And a lightweight mallet. My DS takes one of these on his DofE expeditions, he's always very popular at tent pitching time!.
Thank you. I will look into replacing them with something better than what the tent came with. The pegs will cost more than the tent (was a customer return)! They look like the type 3 (which look pretty impressive compared with the ones I am used to using). I had no idea that there were so many types. I intend to use the tent all year round, so it will be worth it. New mallet is on the list too.
