Because heat rises. Put your hand underneath burner on such a stove & you won't feel much heat.

I think the stink of gas from a canister/cylinder is really strong ,a horrid un-mistaking smell, so usually a give away of a leak

We've had the no charcoal bbq rule before. We have a Cobb, and now a cadac so use them both depending on what's for dinner. Plenty of space in the caravan now. However, when we were tenters not so much space and we cooked on just the cobb. On the site where we had the rule of no bbq, i was a little naughty. I set my camping table up outside, and set the cobb up on it. Because it was on the plastic? table and flames weren't showing etc no one batted an eyelid. Used it for 2 weeks. I had many admiring glances and people asking what the gorgeous smell was when I did a ham joint on in one day mind.

I think residual memories/fears from childhood can sometimes be a good thing if it stops you rushing in where angels fear to tread...

You had some concerns/fears over using gas as a means of cooking...Expressed those concerns on here and asked a few questions regarding its use....And received some good advice from folk who have used gas for years with no issues..as well as answers from folk who do not use gas for personal reasons....

I would say all the bases have been covered...So no need to feel silly or daft asking the questions you did...As you go away better informed than you were previously...

I think we(UKCS members) all know...Now that you are armed with the facts and details of its use will be a safe user of gas in future....

All I can add is that last thing at night...Or after the last cuppa is brewed...I disconnect the cylinder form the cooker.....Only takes a moment to connect again in the morning.....

I am now looking forward to buying a nice little gas cooker, LP with a refillable bottle

Smiledmb.... The Cadac Safari Chef looks to be a pretty close substitute for the Cobb... is this the one you have ?

How about using a Trangia meths stove?

These are used by Girl Guides, Scouts and Duke Of Edinburgh Awards teenagers all the time. I still have my trusty Trangia from my week-long DofE expedition on Dartmoor almost 20 years ago. Its a great piece of kit.

And, if a 13-year old can be trusted to use one, even in these Health & Safety gone mad times, then they must be fairly safe!
