Hi
Does anyone have any advice on a camping fridge? We camp in a tent and I want a proper fridge to keep food cold - fed up with numerous shopping trips whilst away. And something that would make a little ice for my G&T would be a bonus!
Go Outdoors have a Tristar one on offer - any good - or avoid?
I bought a second hand table top fridge with small freezer compartment for £15 after seeing it advertised in a local newsagent's window. It had been used as an extra fridge over the Christmas period by the previous owner and was like new!
It is brilliant for camping although it is quite big and bulky.
Definitely worth looking for a second hand one.
Can I just ask if that would work for a tent in terms of safety? I know when I have bought a fridge we've been asked to let it stand (can't remember how long for) to let it settle before it is safe to turn on. There is a big difference in the prices of camping v table top fridges, if safe the table top idea sounds good.
We've camped with a table top for ten years ... upgraded to a Logik (£99) three years ago.
Always manage to switch on within twenty minutes of arrival at site ... as long as it travels the right way up (i.e. not on its back), there should be no problems.
we have a table top and store in in the folding camper but does have to be led on its side or its to high to shut the camper. we always unpack, plug it in and have never had a problem with it. its great as we use frozen meals sometimes and there is enough room to keep a couple in the freezer part.
I remember being told to let a fridge stand for 24 hours too, something about cfc's settling, maybe you don't need to do that these days or it was for the freezer compartment
A fridge is bets kept in the vertical position when travelling because if you have the fridge horizontal there can be issues with the oil from the compressor moving about the pipes. If this happens the fridge may not function correctly. Hence you leave it stood in the vertical position for about 4 hours to let the oil go back into the compressor.
Travelling with it in the vertical position allows you to plug it in when you arrive on site without any issues.
As already mentioned, I travel with my table top fridge in the correct (upright) position.
When I arrive on site I set the kitchen tent up first and put the fridge in.
I then set the rest of my outfit up and then plug the fridge in so it as had a bit of time to settle. Never had a problem with the fridge.

Manage to store ours in the FC for transit, too .... but always have it upright ... and it's not a tiny one ... is yours very tall?
