I am wanting to buy a Wolf Lake 7 but I'm worried about overloading my Qashqai + 2! I have a roof box & a Thule back rack which sits on my tow bar & takes a big bag of about 60 kgs. 200kg of people in the car plus a boot full & roof box full of gear! The wolf lake 7 is 61 kgs and I'm worrying about my usual 550 mile summer drive through France! Should I be looking to stay inside the "max pay load"? Is this the bible if load for a car? Does this figure include my weight? Thanks in advance for any replies.
The unladen weight may or may not include a driver and some fuel. Varies between manufacturers and different models sometimes.
If you exceed ANY of your gross figures and get pulled in for a spot check. Thats the end of your journey unless you can bring the weight down.
Then the fine and points to think about.
The vehicles gross laden weight must not be exceeded at all.
You can have the vehicle below the gross weight yet still have too much weight over one axle.
Read your car handbook, all the info you require is in there. Max payload appears to be 565kg for all models of Qashqai+2 regardless of engine. This starts from max kerbweight arrived at thus..."European Directive 95/48/EC which specifies the kerb weight as a car in ready to drive condition with the fuel tank 90% full, a driver on board weighing 68 kg and luggage of 7 kg."
You will also notice there are quoted max axle weights & also max towbar weight 75kg. This is all the info you need for safe loading. There might be a problem with weight of your towbar box which combined with weight of rear passengers & boot load may overload rear axle while still within max payload limit.
The handbook does not quote a roof rack load limit but this normally around 100kg on many cars. I would try to load roof box to max limit, minimise load on towbar & you should be ok.
The obvious answer here is to get a trailer. It's a terrific strain on a car to drive long distances while loaded to the max even if you are just legal and it's very common to develop serious mechanical problems in the weeks following your holidays. There was a thread about it here not long ago. And apart from that it affects the road handling of the car quite dramatically, not to mention increase your stopping distance.
Our roof rack limit is 70kg btw, for a Ford Mondeo Estate. It's best not to put the heavy stuff in a roofbox but to load it up with light bulky items like bedding.
ETA: There are plenty of public weighbridges around, just Google. Then have a trial run to check weights, you can add in people weights. Very often folk get a really nasty shock at this point as to how overloaded they are.
Spot on Val ...
Please, do seriously consider a small trailer ... it will improve your car handling, safety, comfort and be much better for the car, as it will considerably reduce the stress on pretty well every mechanical aspect of the vehicle.
And, yes, light weight bulky stuff in the roofbox ... the last thing you want is a top heavy car ... that really will affect its handling!
Many small trailers can have a small roof box mounted on top ... makes a very neat package, and increases your carrying ability.
We have seen to many overloaded vehicles over the many years of working for a breakdown recovery agent and all during the holiday period towing a small trailer makes life in the towing vehicle more comfortable and for the small amount of extra fuel you will use it would be better safe than sorry, Box trailers can be hired to save buying,A Top boxes is Ideal for bulky light stuff.
Provided the car is not loaded beyond it's limit & load is evenly distributed reliability will not be an issue with a modern car that has been serviced at required interval. Towing a trailer will put more load onto car, the increase in fuel consumption will tell you that & will also cost more on the ferry.
Obviously more care must be taken when driving with a load on, with more gentle acceleration through gears & caution when cornering. The longevity of major components of a car is very much down to driving style over the life of vehicle whether loaded or empty.
ALL loading on a car will result in increased fuel consumption ... the heavier the load ... the higher the fuel consumption.
I suspect there is a point where putting extra load on a trailer rather than in the car will result in better performance. I haven't seen any comparison tables ... maybe someone should do it!
Thanks for all the advice. A couple more questions I have! Will a roof box spread the load over both axels? Am I correct in thinking I have 565kg to get to capacity on top of the driver and a 90% full tank? Having spent a lot on this easy base for my tow bar I am loathed To buy a trailer unless I absolutely need to, plus I like to travel at 130kph in France and I'm not sure how i feel doing that towing! I don't understand how much weight I can have on each axel, it isn't clear on line or in the owners manual, it could be me! I'm not very technically minded! Any further replies would be very greatfully received. Thanks, Pete.
It would help is you posted up exact model but assuming it is Qashqai+2 1.5dci 2wd, brochure states..front axle 1175kg, rear 1215kg max weights, ideally with car loaded as you wish to go on holiday, run it over an axle weigher & provided these weights are not exceeded then you are good to go. Thats if you have an axle weighbridge in your area of course.
Read my link, you can add 565kg to higher kerbweight figure so you can take this to mean you can add 565kg + driver & fuel. But if you take you own figures of total about 320kg & add rest of gear, cooker etc you should still easily be well below your max. If you can fit tent in front of roof box & light gear behind it, put gas bottle/cooker etc in boot & keep towbar box as light as poss. you should be ok.
Main danger is not total overload but overload on rear axle which as well as being illegal will make steering light which is dangerous so you have to look at it logically, try to keep as much weight as possible amidships.
Towing will not necessarily increase your fuel consumption. Towing the Raclet Safari fully loaded (c. 600kg) our fuel consumption was less than normal due to the lower speeds driven. Just takes longer to get there, but having the TT and a nice comfy bed at the end of the journey is worth it! (never thought I would hear myself saying driving slower and towing would be worth it!)
Load up as normal and get yourself to a weighbridge and take a spare car to off load the excess
