Morning all. Just got our little van sited for the winter on a fully serviced pitch. All fine and dandy until its time to make the morning cuppa. We fill the kettle from the tap which is supplied from the aqua roll where we have mains water piped direct via a float valve. The water tastes fine most time but now and then we get a disgusting antiseptic taste. Has anyone ever experienced this? Thanks very much. Lisa.

We never drink water that has gone through caravan system but get fresh from tap daily. Done this through our 40 years of caravanning as water lying in van pipes is a good breeding ground especially during summer months. We were on a pitch next to water supply a few months ago and i would say 80% of vans visited the taps with bottles each day.

When was the last time you cleaned the system? If it has been a while, give it a clean through with Puriclean

I once made the mistake of using a length of green garden hose to fill my aquaroll.

Got the same disgusting metallic taste. I should have used the blue "food safe" hose but it was just too expensive.

Still use the green garden hose but aquaroll system in the van now only for washing and cleaning purposes.

Drinking water now taken straight from the tap into large (ex milk) plastic bottles.

Always keep a couple in the van for this purpose.

No definately the green hose.  I tried it at several locations and even at home with the same result.

Even tested it using a short 6" length to make it easier to fill the milk bottles - same thing.

Whilst using it on site to fill a milk bottle the guy opposite asked if he could also fill his container using my piece of hose.

An hour later he knocked on my door to advise me that his cup of tea was disgusting and to ensure that I didn't use the water from that tap.

I tried mine but couldn't taste it in the fresh cold water however, my tea the next morning was also undrinkable.

Filling the kettle direct from the same tap (without short hose) was perfectly OK.

Lesson learned, never drink water that has passed through green garden hosepipe!

I've had such tastes as TCP, antiseptic & others until I started using a jug water filter.
From the filter the water ALWAYS tastes good.
When first using the jug filters we did a blind tasting test & both strongly preferred filtered water. Try it for yourself !

These jug filters usually take much of the hardness out as well, so kettle element rarely needs a clean up.

I also ALWAYS use blue hoses, lest an absent minded person sups straight from the tap.

Interesting bit of reading from DEFRA

Thanks for the DEFRA link bobmel, makes interesting reading however, I have already established beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is my particular brand of garden hose that taints my caravan water supply.

As I stated earlier, I am more than happy to continue using the garden hose and just keep a couple of plastic milk bottles filled direct from the tap for use as drinking water.

The best part being that I got the bottles absolutely free from Tesco’s, obviously I had to pay for the milk inside before I could use them!

The alternative at the time, was to buy (at vast expense), two sections of blue "food safe" hose (and there’s a "rip-off if ever there was one), one length is simply not long enough for normal caravan use) so, being of Scottish origin (short arms, deep pockets) I elected for the milk bottles.    sorry Swizz.

We had a similar problem in the past. It emanated from our water barrel (water hog). We tried a tip, that was given on this forum, to clean out the barrel using household bleach and then rinse with tap water. Since we tried it no problems.
Regards Bob.

We used to keep tropical fish and we were advised to not clean out the tank on a certain day as once a week the water companys add chemicals to the water on that day. I think it is a Sunday. That could explain why it is now and again.

We always take cheap bottled water away with us for our coffees, had too many coffees that take a bit funny.

Yea the water on the site we are on has a strong medi taste we never drink water from the aqua roll and bring a container from home when that done we buy cheep supermarket water. I have been told it depends which tap we use on site, never the less I always take my own water cause I love to snuggle in our van with a lovely cuppa !! I think they use somesort of medi tasting stuff in the water on large sites to prevent any bacteria forming in the water !!

Hi there have you tried fitting an inline water filter eg carbon type it gets rid of stuff in the water. You can get them off ebay for about £15 just need to get correct hose tails to fit water pipe.

If i don't have a tap on my pitch to use with my blue hose then I use 2 feet of 40 mm white polypropylene domestic plumbing pipe, between tap & barrel. I take 2 pieces together with 2 push fit 135 degree elbows, for those Spanish sites where you have to fill from the cold water tap on a wash up sink.
