Hi All,

We are looking at buying a camping stove. Previous to having kids we just used an old trangia, but not done much camping the last few years and now introducing the little ones to camping and need something a bit bigger!

I am totally baffled by the choice, I think we want 2 rings and a grill, but no idea what our best bet is. We have a budget of <£50.

Any suggestions please?!

Before we bought a caravan we had one of these still got it, was bought in 1973 and still going great.

Good suggestion by bobmel there. We have one of those and it has always been reliable, though the grill is not brilliant. You will need a gaz cylinder for it though. The R907 is the smallest one.

The other thing you could consider is a couple of suitcase stoves like this. They have no grill though and run on butane canisters. You can pick up a pack much cheaper than those in the link though. Depending on how much you use them, they can be expensive as you use a lot of cannisters.

Which ever stove you use make sure the cooking area is safe and preferably either outside in a porch area, under a tarp or in a separate 'kitchen tent'

Good advice from the previous two posters (though the R907 is actually the largest size Campingaz cylinder - the stove could use the smaller ones or, with different regulators, larger cylinders from Calor or FloGas).

oops yes sorry, I meant largest not smallest

That's what I thought you meant!

We also have the '70s (or earlier?) version of the stove suggested by bobmel and yourself, but usually find a suitcase type stove, like that in your second link, more convenient and of course lighter and less bulky, which the OP might like to take into consideration.

If the grill is just for toast then a wire mesh toaster is the answer, otherwise I use a section of aluminium checkerplate above the grill (ie on top of the rings) which stops the hot air rising and grills much quicker. this hasn't harmed the grill over five years so far!

I've just got rid of all car camping stoves and bought a primus njord duo. Two burners but uses screw in or clic cartridges. For toasting we have square mesh box thingy and primus make a griddle too. No more bulky canisters and being a duo I can source cartridges anywhere. It will even take the cheap canisters for blow torches.
I still have my petrol burners for backpacking.
