We have a caravan that has the flying saucer type aerial on it's roof. We have never taken a TV away with us although we have been caravanners for about 25 years but decided we might take it on our next trip for chilly evenings.

We cannot get a signal with it at all and have decided it must be defunct.

What type of aerial do you recommend we buy in it's place and what do we need as well as a new aerial?

I think our caravan is around 1997 era.

Has you tv got a built in freeview reciever ?

Hi Tess.
Have a look at the 'aerials' topic on the 'Repairs' forum. There is little to go wrong with the aerial itself but more likely to be the wiring

If you are trying out the tv on the drive, in a built-up area, you may not get a signal anyway, as the houses block the signal. That's why most house aerials are on the roof or the chimney...

The aerial may be fine!

I would take the tv away with you next time you go camping, but just in case the TV aerial doesn't work, take some DVDs and player.

Also, you need to remember that each time you go to a different place, you will need to retune the tv from scratch.

The first thing to be clarified is the question asked in post No. 2.

If the TV has no built-in Freeview (or Freesat) tuner you won't get a peep out of it without a digibox!

the tv has freeview built in also i have re-tuned it hundreds of times outside the house but to no avail

I'd suggest connecting the TV to the aerial in your house and tuning it in. Once that works take it to the caravan and using the cable you plugged it into the house aerial with, connect it to the caravan aerial.

If it works you've won. If not it could be a problem with the caravan internal aerial wiring, the distribution amplifier (which should have a red led indicating that there is power to it usually 12v DC, or the caravan aerial itself.

At least you'll have a starting piont.

Read my post above again. It's very rare to get a signal on the drive, the aerial simply isn't high enough or the house/housing estate is in the way of the signal.

My Sis thought her flying saucer aerial was defunct as she was trying it out on the drive. It worked perfectly when she went to a campsite and tried it there.

Jax365 we live a stones throw from the 500 megawatt transmitter at Billsdale a piece of wet string would get you a signal here!

Looking at the new digital coverage now that they have turned off the analogue and are devoting the transmitters to the digital signals, unless you are in a poor signal area ie on the moors or under a hill, or screened in some other way, then the majority should get good tv signals even with a sauces shaped old style aerial on the roof of the caravan.

tried it last weekend and the only time we got any kind of picture was if i connected a booster to the aerial side of the roof aerial and then to the tele missing out the box in the van completely. so gave up and watched dvd's
