We've got 2 of these for our girls ages 6 & 4. They are proper bags and probably a bit more suitable than the ready bed things you can get from argos etc.

Same as you would buy for yourself.
Do you really need to buy a child sized one. If it's too long fold it under neath them. This also helps insulate them from the ground a little more.

We bought our grandaughter a junior mummy style sleeping bag when she was 5 yrs old, she is now 7 yrs old and to big for the bag.
To be fair she is quite tall for her age but it will be an adult bag this year which we have as a spare anyway.

Our girls (8 and 5) use these and they have been fine. They can be reduced in length from 170cm to 145cm.

Friends gave us 2 x children's sleeping bags. Last summer had to give my 7 year old my old adult sized bag (20-25years old). She is fine in it. Then on return from our camping bought a sleeping bag from tesco - can't remember the brand. We compared it to my new one and there was not much difference in thickness and warmth. We will be summer camping with the children.

At home we have a 13.5 tog duvet, the children have 10.5 tog (as recommended for children) so often they are hot but the 4.5 would not be enough for winter. So my point is even a cheaply would be fine for children.

I have not used sleeping bag liners for the children as they would be tied up in knots and not able to get out for the toilet in time (out and shoes on and wait for me to get up and then across field to the toilet in the night)

My children are now 6 and 8 and have adult bags.

My daughter had an adult sized sleeping bag, has for the last year. I bought her a mummy bag at first but she hated it, said she couldn't sprawl out in it so bought her a bog standard square bag

We have Outwell Camper Lux sleeping bags and ended up getting one for my 6 year old as she said she was so comfy in ours compared to her junior mummy bag - these are square bags and (like her mum) she likes the space to move about.

http://www.outwell.com/en/Products/SleepingBags/Camper/CamperLux.aspx

As suggestd by previous commenters, we fold the excess of her sleeping bag under. It's nice and roomy for her and the pillow part of the bag can be gathered up for a snugger fitting.

The Outwell link above gives specs and how effective they are in cold weather.

Whilst researching the right bag I read that excess space in a sleeping bag makes them not as efficient in retaining heat and mummy bags are better in this respect - so depends what your requirements are.
