We are returning to camping after 30years and have been looking for a cooking stove. We would like advice please on the difference between the two. (cheapness, availability and useability etc.)

Hi Calor Gas is cheaper and is available throughout the UK but not abroad. You can use either Butane or Propane.

Campingaz is more expensive, available in smaller bottles and is available abroad

The choice is to buy a big enough bottle of Calor gas so that you never run out while in Europe, or a smaller bottle of Camping Gaz that may run out but can be replaced.
The fairly new generation of butane/propane mix clip on disposable can Camping Gaz stoves are worth looking at if you want light or medium weight camping.

Get one of each. Use the Calor in the UK and switch to Campinggaz when the Calor runs out in the middle of breakfast. No half done sausages and you can change the Calor at your leisure. Use the other way round when abroad

One other thing to consider, particularly if planning on camping "out of season", is that once the frosty nights kick in, propane will hold out better than butane, which may well start to freeze. (Forgive me, I'm not sure of the technicalities/precise freezing points).

For that reason, as well as our planned annual trip to France, we have both... A CalorLite (Propane), and a Campingaz 907 (Butane).
