Thinking of buying a Maxview Omnisat 54cm portable satellite system. Has anyone got one of these - how easy are they to set up?

Thank you!

Before you shell out your hard earned cash for a 54cm dish. (Fine for the UK).

Think about how far south (France) you may want to pick up the satellite.

You just might need a bigger dish!

According to the Maxview spec, that doesn't include a receiver whiich, in my view makes the kit a bit pricey!

Don't need a receiver because will be taking the sky box. Maplin's advertising for £100 - didn't think that was too expensive!

Do you intend to use for UK only or are we talking outside of the UK.

Such a Dish will only get you North of Lyon if your thinking of abroad.

For UK use only I would be looking at something smaller say 45cm regular Dish or better still maybe a Flat Plate antenna, and if money is no object a Avtex Snipe, fully automatic Flat Antenna that will sniff out the Astra2 satellite for a mere £700.

Another neat Dish for UK use would be the Arcon Multimo, although over priced at £150 a nice bit of engineering.

For Southern Europe say South East France, it is looking like a 1m Dish is going to be the minimum, and with a decent LNB at that.

And even then no guarantee of being able to receive Sky/Freesat etc from the Astra2 Fleet of satellites due to recent changes.

£100 from Maplins doesn’t seem a bad price for what’s included in kit.

Have you had any previous experience setting up a sat dish?

No only used an automatic one before. However have had it explained to us, and are aware that it may be tricky to start with, but believe that once we have mastered it it should be ok. Don't want to shell out hundreds of pounds!

Don’t blame you!

All you really need is a cheap sat finder and know how to use it.

Once you can do it with your eyes shut, my Inclinometer method will make setting up a whole lot quicker.

I think I’ve provided This link  for you before in an earlier thread but here it is again – hope it helps.

Note: I’ve found that the "Skew" setting is not really that critical unless you’re on the fringe of the footprint so just set it at about 12° and that should suffice for most places you are setting up.

Also note, that if ever you plan to use the Marine type compass depicted in my write-up, it will not work on a steel dish!
