Hi all

We are seasoned campers and always end up with our estate car stuffed to the gunnels with equipment. This year my husband has swapped his big family estate car for an Audi A5 convertible; with 2 weeks camping in France booked for summer I am now panicking about finding a suitable trailer.

So, am asking for your help. We need a trailer big enough to hold ALL of our gear (v little boot space in the car esp. With the roof down) with a lockable lid and that we can fit a bike rack to with 4 bikes!

Are some much easier to tow than others?

They are so expensive but we don't want to go cheap if it means we have to go really slowly the whole way to Southern France!

Any recommendations please? There appear to be no trailer sales places near here (Bath) so it's hard to know what size we need.

Many thanks

We bought a brenderup 1205 last weekend. I think it's about 6ft 8" long and we're planning on putting the raised sides and lockable ABS lid on top.

That should take all of our camping gear so we don't have to also use the roof box or have lots of things in the car.

Def worth having a look at. I towed it home (1.5 hour journey) and didn't even notice I was towing anything really. Will be a different matter fully loaded but everyone I spoke to said that brenderup were really good and easy to tow.

It's now chained to the wall of our house in 2 places so we can keep hold of it!

Hi, we bought the brenderup 1150s and have been impressed so far. We just added the abs lid and bars. Used it for 2000 miles last year in france and just recently to pick up some items from Stockport. Tows really well due to the a frame. Lichfield trailers fitted our tow bar and sorted the trailer, could not rate them any higher as they were brilliant.

One thing... I am now wondering if we should have gone for the 1250 ;) as we take a lot of stuff!

What's your budget?

I've got a £600 second-hand Anssems GT750 which I've put roof bars on and racks for three bikes. Four may just about fit but it would be a squeeze. Most kit* is in the trailer (just!) but bedding and a camping fridge go in the car.

Rather than buying, is hiring a trailer an option?

Thanks for all your advice.

Pwatson - are you selling your Anssems or were you just telling me what you bought it for? If you are selling, would the £600 include lid, roof bars and bike rack, and where are you?
Many Thanks,

Amber

Definitely not selling I'm afraid

They do come up on ebay every now and again, so worth keeping an eye out.

I've also got an Anssems GT750, although my lid is configured the other way and on gas struts, and I must say it's a dream to tow. I've also got an A5 convertible too, which I had a detachable towbar fitted to last year and together they're great. It's nice to have the security of a larger wheeled trailer in my mind, and the bonus is that you can lock the aluminium lid shut with its own integral locking system. It makes for a great lockable storage area when at the campsite too.

The bad news is I've had to expand onto the roof of the trailer this year for the bigger camps and there's not much room in the boot of an A5, just about enough room for clothes (there's 4 of us) and a few bits and bobs.

Oh and it's not recomended to tow with the roof down.

Best of luck and happy holidays.

£600 for that trailer is a bit of a bargain in my eyes pwatson, I paid a bit more than that. ;-)

I bought a Brenderup 1150s with extension sides and ABS lid in 2012, definitely worth the expense as it is well-made and tows like a dream.

We have an Erde trailer. Just bought a hard top (well raised a bit and hard top) but not used it with the new top.

Costco have Erde trailers with a raised metal bit on them to raise the top but they are soft toppped. These are obviously new. Seem to remember they started with a 4 (the cost) but low 400's, mid or high i can't remember.

Hi,

ANnther one for the Brenderup 1205.  Great trailer and towes a dream; easy to forget you have it on the back.  Just about to buy side extensions and possibly lid.  You will have no trouble with this trailer.

Cheers  DanR

Thanks all so much for your replies. We today became the proud owners of an Anssems GT something or other with side extensions, lockable lid and bars to attach bike rack to for £650. I really appreciate your replies :)

Appreciate this thread is a little old but we too have a GT750 with extended sides and lid (and roof box on top too - have two dogs so they take up the boot in our 4x4) but has anyone found a storage box to fit on the single drawbar? Plenty of boxes for "A" frame drawbars but struggling. May have to have something fabricated!

I'm a welder fabricator I was looking for the same thing, in the end I fabricated a box to suite what we wanted. I can't say for sure but I should say you are looking at about £250-300 to get one fabricated out of mild steel sheet. Even more if you want to save weight and go aluminium. I used 1.5 mm sheet light weight but still strong.
